vcodec & spywarequake woes... [RESOLVED]

Hi folks, my problem started when I had clicked on: 'download vcodec' to view a file. There are 3 new activities I am experiencing. The first is located on the bottom right hand corner of the screen in the notification area in which there is a green icon of a handicap that changes intermittently to a red icon that symbolises the prefix: 'anti' or 'non'. The second issue is a yellow box that pops up on a regular cycle above the notification area, which reads: 'Your computer is infected!...'. The third problem is a program called: 'Spyware Quake' that installs and runs without my permission. It 'scans' my system then reports that it has found 11 threats of malicious spyware.

Not sure if this is related but an observation of the changes I am experiencing since the incident had happened. After clicking on the 'control panel' program from the 'start menu', an error message appears that reads: 'An error ocurred while windows was working with the control panel file C:WINDOWS\system32\netsetup.cpl'.

Anti-(virus/adware/spyware) programs I have running are: Symantec Antivirus, Adaware SE Personal, Spyware Begone and Spyware Search & Destroy. They have worked well before this incident and I do not have any complaints with their function. I will appreciate your help very much and look forward to working virtually together in resolving this problem.

Hi folks, I have read the self-help tips posted on this forum to remove malware. I had followed the instructions concerning the removal of 'Spyware Quake'. Wow! What success! What a user friendly site that offers advice worth in gold and genuine aid and guidance! Thank you guys and gals if any!

Just a note: after having followed the removal instructions of 'Spyware Quake', I had searched my system for 'vcodec' and had found some zipped files. Are these supposed to be in my system? Do the steps to remove these files from my system differ than that of others experiencing this problem? Thanks.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi Trevuren, thanks for helping me. I would like to say that before you had replied, I had followed the instructions posted on this site to remove 'smitfraud'. Why this? Well, because when I had searched the system for each of the malware listed on this site, I had found 2 zipped folders named: 'SmitfraudC' and 'SmitfraudC1'. Hi Trevuren, I would like to add that when I search the system for 'vcodec' and 'smitfraud' files or folders, the results are: 15 'vcodec' zipped files, 1 'ovcodec2.dll' file and 2 'smitfraud' zipped files mentioned above. Not sure if you would like to have known this bit of information but, I wanted to share it with you. Thanks again Trevuren!

A. Boot into Safe Mode and DELETE the following files/folders:

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.
* Both the Smitfraud folders

* C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys

* Open the zipped VCodek folders and look at what they contain. If it is a series of Movie titles or Music, please Delete the entire folder in both cases.

B. Reboot back into Normal Mode

C. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

D. Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

E. Reboot your computer.

F. Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
- Install ewido security suite
- When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
- Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
- The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
- The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update
- Click on Start
- The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
- REBOOT into Safe Mode
- Run EWIDO
- Click on scanner
- Click on Start Scan
- Let the program scan the machine
- While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
- Click Save report
- Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Hi Trevuren, thanks again! I followed your instructions and have the 2 logs you had requested. There is one file I have not deleted yet, which is named: 'ovcodec2.dll'. The file is zipped. It doesn't look like a traditional folder with a zipper toward the left hand side. When I click on it a small window appears with the title:'Select a Destination' on the top of the pain and 3 buttons at the bottom, which read: 'make a new folder', 'extract', and 'cancel'. I wanted to get your thoughts before taking any action. I have attached a screen shot if you would like to view it. Thanks again Trevuren! And here are the logs:

A. Please find the complete path to the ovcodec2.dll. By full path, I mean C:\....\ovcodec2.dll

B. Now, I need you to submit it to Jotti's for analysis.

1. Click HERE to get to Jotti's site.

2. At the top of the Jotti window, use the Browse button to locate the following file on your system:

Replace by full path of ovcodec.dll

3. Once you have located the file, click SUBMIT and the content of the file will be uploaded by the site and analysed.

4. Please provide me with the results of the analysis.

5. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Free Virus Scanner, then Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
- Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Standard
- Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
- Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information into your next post along with a fresh HJT log and the report from Jotti.

Hi Trevuren, I do not know how to add a screen shot to this reply, I thought it might clearify things. Here is the path I got from the search results: C:\WINDOWS\DriverCache\¡386\driver.cab 114KB Application Extension. Okay, I will now go through the other steps you had advised.

I recommend you remove all the malicious files stored in your Norton/Antivirus Quarantine

If you are unfamiliar with this procedure, click on the following Symantec

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures and recommendations.

Hey Trevuren, how's it going? The folders: 'quarantine', 'backup items' and 'repaired items' in Symantec AV Corporate Edition, are empty. I just have 6 files showing in the 'virus history log'; does this pose a problem? But this info is only from the view point of the program itself rather than that from the windows browser. Would you have liked for me to have found this info from the window's broswer? When I had tried to follow the path: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine, I couldn't find the folder: 'Application Data'. Perhaps it is hidden. However, when I did a search for 'quarantine', the results showed 3 folders for programs: Adaware, Ewido and Symantec, which of the three is empty.

Last night while searching on 'Google', I had a little attack from sites: winfixer.com and popuptraffic.com. What happened? Well, I was redirected to these sites, a bunch of popups flooded my system and then all of the windows applications running in IE, which was three, had closed. I had 'Geeks to Go' in one window, 'Jotti's scanner' in a second and 'Google' in a third. I was surfing in the third window while waiting for 'Jotti's' to spit out a report. I had kept 'Geeks to Go' open so that I could report back to you. It was strange and hasn't repeated since. Maybe, a malware program or its components, which is secretely running in my system is aware of what we are doing and so, it is trying to put up one last fight!

Just some notes: the error message that appeared when I had clicked on 'control panel' after my system was infected and before coming to 'Geeks to Go' for assistance, hasn't reappeared. The message read: 'An error occured while Windows was working with the Control Panel file C:\WINDOWS\system32\netsetup.cpl'.

Second, though every virus detected by Symantec is or was contained in the quarantine folder, under the 'action taken' column, two have been 'left alone'. Does this pose a problem?
