Hi folks

I'm running a Dell Pentium 4, 2.66 GHz, 512 RAM.
I've got gigs and gigs of free disk space left and I've recently defragged it.

I've run through all the pre-HiJackThis posting steps including online virus scan and the various anti-spyware prog scans. Apart from a couple of tracking cookies which are always reappearing there was nothing much to report.

But my system is running really slowly. When I click the Start button it takes 5-10 secs quite often to open the menu, and so on...

I posted in the Windows XP forum and was suggested to come here after defragging my hard drive.

Here's my HiJackThis:

I do not see any malware, but I do see some items that you can check off in hijack this.
Did this start becoming slower after you started adding some protection programs, such as Zone Alarm or Spyware Doctors, etc.?

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

(The ones in bold are optional. They should speed up your system. You are not deleting them. You are just deleting them from start-up.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InkSaver] C:\program files\inksaver\InkSaver.exe hide<<what is this?
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDSentry] "C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_7 -reboot 1

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Gadwin PrintScreen 2.6] C:\program files\screngrab\printscreen\printscreen.exe /nosplash

O4 - Startup: Stickies.lnk = C:\Program Files\Stickies\stickies.exe
O4 - Startup: UD Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\United Devices\UD.EXE

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE<<resource hog

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 onlyDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Hello again,

Thanks for making your instructions so easy to follow, much appreciated!

I've done all of that and I would say there's a small but noticeable improvement, but that the main problem doesn't seem to have been resolved yet.

There's still a sluggishness so that for example when I click to minimise a full screen window it doesn't instantly go to the task bar, there's a 2-3 second wait before a response, and when I click the Start button on the task bar there's a 3-4 second wait before the smaller menu and then if I click All Programs it takes another 4-5 seconds to go from a greyed out rectangle, to having all the programs listed.

I know these are small delays but they're very different from the instant responsiveness of my friends' PCs and they are mostly lower spec when running Windows XP.

Is there anything else to try? In the past I've tried to improve things by running freeware memory optimising software etc but it never helped and I just uninstalled it. I've since checked that memory is set by Windows to optimise program performance etc and that all looks fine.

Cheers for your help so far! :whistling:

You have some programs running that may not be needed at start-up.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InkSaver] C:\program files\inksaver\InkSaver.exe hide
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SBAutoUpdate] "C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster\sbautoupdate.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Gadwin PrintScreen 2.6] C:\program files\screngrab\printscreen\printscreen.exe /nosplash
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe" AcRdB7_0_7 -reboot 1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
O4 - Startup: Stickies.lnk = C:\Program Files\Stickies\stickies.exe
O4 - Startup: UD Agent.lnk = C:\Program Files\United Devices\UD.EXE

Do you have a lot of music, photos?

Let's try another thing to see if anything is running that shouldn't be.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
    • Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Hello again,

Thanks for your patience with this problem ... I know it's a bit of a puzzler.

I've done a bit more StartUp disabling as you suggested, via HiJackThis. I've left one or two things in the list because I think I need them though:

avast - for realtime antivirus protection
inksaver - little prog which reduces inkjet ink usage whenever I print something
spywareblaster - updates spyware protection on each reboot

Hopefully it's OK to keep these. If not just let me know.

To be honest it doesn't seem to be a question of in-memory programs causing the slowdown because I've tried closing everything apart from my firewall and restarting the system: it doesn't make much obvious difference, there's still prolonged periods of hard-drive accessing for no obvious reason etc, which is what led me to thinking there might be some 'hidden'/'background' problem that's actually at the root of things.

You asked about Music and Photos. The folder sizes are:

8.8 GB of music
5.6 GB of photo/video clips

Here's the Silent Runners log you asked me to post (it's long!):

"Silent Runners.vbs", revision 45, http://www.silentrunners.org/

Quick PS:

Forgot to mention I got an odd error message window (black and red) when I switched on this morning.

Did a quick screengrab which am attaching as jpeg...dunno if it's relevant.

Matt :-)

avast - for realtime antivirus protection<<My bad on that one. I copied and pasted and didn't take that one out.

the other two are good programs to have but you don't need them when you boot up the machine. You can manually start them. It's your choice. Sometimes disabling programs on start-up helps the machine get going a little faster and sometimes it doesn't make a difference. I will look at your other log in a minute. :whistling:

inksaver - little prog which reduces inkjet ink usage whenever I print something
spywareblaster - updates spyware protection on each reboot

There is one program that is open for discussion--unless you need it, I would remove it and see if that is causing the problem.

C:\Program Files\Buyertools Reminder\ReminderIE.exe

Funnily enough I uninstalled this program (an ebay bidding tool) 1-2 days ago whilst having a general software cleanup to see if I could help myself with this speed issue.

I'm afraid removing it hasn't made much difference.

Is it getting time for me to give up and just start living with the speed probs d'you think?

Or are there other avenues to explore?

All the best, Matt

No, don't give up. Let's run a few more tools and post back the results for me, to make sure it's not malware-related and then I am going to give you some tips on some other issues you can exploe.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click > scan then > next

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Here is a great tutorial on some things you can do to make your ocmputer more efficient.

Restore Your Computer's Performance

Most slowness is not due to malware. Here are some common causes and suggestions:

Overheating
A major cause of slowness is overheating. Open the case and make sure there are no accumulated dustballs or other obstructions to fan operation or air circulation. You can monitor your temperatures with (free) Motherboard Monitor.

Not enough RAM
If you have less than 512 MB, consider adding more memory.

Excessive fragmentation
Defragment your hard disk every so often. The defrag that comes with Win XP is fine, or you may prefer http://www.oo-softwa...ts/ood2000free/ O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware which has more interesting graphics. For defragmenting your pagefile and registry hives, I recommend (free) PageDefrag.

Some legitimate programs are known to use a lot of resources and slow you down
Those described in replies below do not need to be running. If you think that is your problem, please post a HijackThis log and we will help you keep them from starting automatically.

06/01/06 14:10:27 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1015

I'll look into other suggestions later on when I have a bit more time.

Best wishes

Matt

PS I'm beginning to feel a bit guilty for taking up your time, because I'm unemployed at the moment and don't really have the money to make a donation later on...is that a problem? Let me know.

Please look at THIS thread.

Did you recently install Windows Defender? You might try uninstalling and see if that helps. :whistling:
