Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Pro on a machine I built myself almost 2 years ago now. Everything's always run fine, but a month or so back I was hit with a bunch of Spyware/Malware/Viruses. Ever since then my computer's been rebooting itself, seemingly at random. Sometimes it'll reboot when I'm surfing the net, sometimes while playing a game, etc.

I disabled automatic reboots by the advice of a friend; now, the system "dies" and gives me a Blue Screen of Death with the following message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process terminated unexpectedly with a state of

0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).

The System has been shut down.

In this thread (see here), Pi rules suggested that I may still have malware on my machine. After going through the instructions on posting a log file, I have done a HijackThis scan. Here is the file:

• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Thank you so much for helping me! I submitted those two .dll files to the link you provided. I hope some info will turn up on them, because I've tried deleting them without any luck.

I have added the Activescan.txt file from Panda Scan as an attachment because it didn't copy/paste very well into the text field. Quite a few things turned up! Thanks,

Ok, let's get started on cleaning you up. You'll want to save these instructions to notepad, as you'll be in safe mode during the fix.

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop. Don't do anything with it yet.

Reboot into safe mode.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Reboot into normal mode and post a new hijackthis log.

• Click on Send File

Go to Start > Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the below services:

Loading Outpost Connections (KDE)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, under the General tab click the Stop button, then click the drop-down box to change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok.

Open HiJackThis, click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (make sure there are NO spaces before or after the name):

KDE

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, then ask if you want to reboot. Click YES.

Post a new HiJackThis log after it reboots and let me know if you received any error messages.

Thank you Sari, you're very thorough. I couldn't upload the file cmdtel.exe to that site, because it doesn't appear to be on my computer any longer. I did a search for it on the C: drive and didn't find it anywhere.

Your log is clean.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future. I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
