I'm not sure if the main problem I am having is being caused by this malware or if I will need other help, but I need some help getting rid of this crap anyway. :whistling:

The main problem I am having is that when I log off or turn off or restart my computer, it gets to the "saving your settings" screen and just stays there. The only way I can get it to finish shutting down, is to unplug it and let the battery drain until it shuts down. BTW I have a Gateway notebook.

When it started doing this I decided to do a scan with avast!, it found some trojan horses, namely Adload. They are in the virus chest. What do I do with them now?

Next I came here and went through all the steps listed to go through before posting a HijackThis log. Ran CleanUp!, Ad-awareSE, CWShreder, Spybot S&D, and Ewido. Clean UP! saved 1.2GB on this PC... Wow! Ad-aware SE didin't find anything if I remember correctly, Ewido found this:

ewido anti-spyware - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created at: 8:16:48 AM 8/18/2006

+ Scan result:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtdownls_95.ocx -> Adware.Gdown : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sandlot Shared\slghex.dll -> Adware.SpywareStorm : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

::Report end

These are in quarantine... What do I do with them now?

What upset me most is the next step I took. I did the Trend Housecall. It found WhenU and something called Trak PwdStealer. It said these files were cleaned, but this makes me worried that there might be something more hidden away.

I did the Windows update, rebooted and tested and I still have the same problem when logging off or shuting down this computer... Is there anything else in this HiJackThis log that might be causing this problem or do I need help from a different forum?

Thanks for your time.

Just needed to add some additional info. A couple of times when I have restarted or logged off this computer, I have seen a blue screen with white text. It is never there long enough for me to read the text. When I have turned the computer back on after seeing this screen I have gotten an error message that says "Windows has recovered from a serious error". It gives the option to send an error report and when you do it gives more info that says this error was caused by a device driver.

It seems that the shutdown problem may be seperate from the malware problem, but I still need help, since I don't know what to do with the malware that was found and because I don't know anything about device drivers.

Thanks for your time.

Hi gtshadow,

Let's start by disabling some unnecessary programs and see how far that gets us.

Use HijackThis and put a chemckmark before these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe

O16 - DPF: {FA13A9FA-CA9B-11D2-9780-00104B242EA3} (WildTangent Control) - file://E:\games\WebDriverFullInstall.exe

Then please uninstall SpywareGuard and BigFix and reboot your computer.

The items that were quarantined do not require any further attention.
Ewido will keep them quiet.

Let me know how your computer behaves after the reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log

Regards,

Thanks for your reply. I did as you said, but I still seem to be having the same problem when I log off. I did have a problem with one thing you wanted me to do. When I uninstalled SpywareGaurd it said that it couldn't be uninstalled completely but that I could delete what was left manually. When I tried to do that I got a message that said "Cannot delete dlprotect.dll: Access is denied." What do I do about that?

Here is the new HijackThis log.

What I need first now is the error you get on the blue screen.

To prevent the computer from rebooting automatically when a Blue Screen occurs follow this procedure:
Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”

Now, if you get the blue screen again, note exactly what it says and we'll try to determine what's causing it. That should give us a direction to look in.

Don't worry about the SpywareGuard error. After anothetr reboot the file will no longer be loaded and can be deleted.

I got the blue screen again. Here is what it says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.

If this screen appears agian follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufactuer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced options and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x8062C14A, 0xF72A0AB4, 0x00000000)

Begining dump of physical memory.

Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance."

Something else that has been happening... When I log off, I sometimes see one of the pop-ups that comes up when Windows has to shut down a running program before shutting down. I have started getting this even though I have no programs that I know of runniing. The pop-up wasn't staying on the screen long enough for me to see what program it was closing until the last couple of times it has happened. It says it is ending "Windows Form Parking Window". I don't know what that is or if it means anything at all, but I'm trying to give as much info as I can so that you may be able to help me rid myself of this problem.

Hi GT,

In my opinion the symptoms you are seeing could be caused by faulty RAM.
But I would like for one of our hardware specialists to confirm and help you with that, since they are far better at handling these issues then I am.
Can you start a new thread in this forum:
http://www.geekstogo...2003_NT-f5.html

Include a description of your problem and a link to this thread.
( http://www.geekstogo...howtopic=127000 )

If they decide it's a software issue, post back here.
