Below is what I get when I ran Hijack This log after following your instructions to remove malware.

Our problems are:

1) freezing up in Explorer
2) shutdown errors --- "dwwin.exe DLL initialization failed "
"Adobe Acrobat AcroRd 32.exe The instruction at "0x5ad71531" referenced memory at "0x00000014." The memory could not be read."
Then the computer will freeze up and sometimes not shutdown.
3) toolbar in Explorer "magically" disappears and re-appears for no known reason.

I downloaded and ran the anti-spyware software you recommended and after examining results, did not find anything malicious.

Nothing is jumping out at me, but you have a lot of items that I believe the manufacturer installed on there that aren't necessary and causes your computer to take a long time to boot up. Does that happen?

No, you don't have to get rid of them. You can do the same thing by going to start>>run and typing in msconfig

Go to the start-up tab and you can uncheck them. What the computer manufacturer did is added a ton of update items on your start-up. Each time your machine starts up it is searching for the updates. Just taxes the machine IMO. You are not deleting the programs at all.

I will have to let you know how the computer works today. I had trouble yesterday with it freezing up BEFORE I followed your instructions. The problems ---- toolbar disappearing and re-appearing, freezing up in IE, etc. do not happen all of the time, just periodicallly.

Having trouble again. Froze up on me this morning. I was trying to click a link from an e-mail to a web page, and it froze up.


BTW, when I tried to backup my hard drive using my external hard drive, it backup fine but when it tried to compare/verify the backup to the original, it got stuck when it got to the file:

C:.......\\msvcp60.dll

I have tried re-installing this dll file, but I get an error. Could that be causing some of my "freezing" in Windows?

(I have this as an open topic in the Windows XP forum, but just wondered if this could all be related.)

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

I have been running my computer in the Administrator mode, with a guest account. Does that leave my computer open to malware? Should I always run it in Guest mode unless I want to update/download, etc. and in that case switch to Administrator?

If I run it in Guest mode, does that mean that every time I want to download music, back up my computer, etc., I have to switch to Administrator?

I am just wondering if that is why I have been having trouble. What do you recommend?

If I turn on the Guest mode, will I have to import my Favorites, etc. from the Administrator account?
