Thank you in advance for whatever help you can provide! In the past week or so, I seem to have been attacked by all sorts of spyware. The most noticeable problem was the yellow triangle icon with the exclamation point in my task tray that pops up "Warning! Your computer is at risk! Spyware detected on your PC. . . " It is accompanied by a black box with yellow writing that has taken over my desktop. This reads "Warning! You're in danger. . . " When you click on it, it takes you to an IE site "topantispyware" and tries to get you to buy spyware protection.

I have downloaded all the programs and taken all the steps recommended in your "Geeks to Go!_ Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs Go Here _ You Must Read This Before Posting A Highjackthis Log". It has not solved my problem. When I used Ad-aware SE, it was unable to delete one critical file. Similarly, Spybot would not delete one file. And when I tried to download the Windows XP security update (sp1), it failed.

Help! I'm pretty computer illiterate, but I've spent a lot of time looking for suggestions online and have tried everything I've found with no luck. I truly appreciate any help you can provide!

Here is my log:

Don-- Thanks for suggesting I post a log even though I seem to have solved some of the problems. My computer has started to run VERY slowly, so I suspect I haven't solved everything. Here is my log. Again, thank you so much!

Hi there thejenny100
  • You are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it and unzip the program into it. It is very important you do this before anything else!

    Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
    You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it hjt
    Move HJT into this folder please

  • Please set your system to show
    all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.
  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark next to the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    O2 - BHO: Cls - {CF021F40-3E14-23A5-CBA2-7173706D1316} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\spm1316.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service Host] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{020AF052-00FE-422A-A6B1-C07BC9CF31C7}\SVCHOST.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {2764A468-DB8F-4460-986A-0F92C63282BC} - (no file) (HKCU)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {2764A468-DB8F-4460-986A-0F92C63282BC} - (no file) (HKCU)
    O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
    O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {FEA581E1-8078-487D-A22C-5D0771384FEB} - (no file) (HKCU)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {FEA581E1-8078-487D-A22C-5D0771384FEB} - (no file) (HKCU)

    Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

    Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
    C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm

    Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Please run these two online scans. Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

You should try to delete any files that these scanners are unable to clean. Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.

Then scan again with HijackThis and post another log.

I've followed your instructions, and here's where we stand.

I deleted all the files in HiJack This, except for 04-HKLM\..\Run: [Service Host] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services\{020AF052-00FE-422A-A6B1-C07BC9CF31DC7}\SVCHOST.EXE, which I couldn't find in the logfile.

When I ran TrendMicro's House Call, it found TSPY DLOADER.DH and TROJ AGENT.QJ. I told it to delete both files. I got a message that read "Unable to delete the infected entire contents of the compressed file C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-2980349567-2123809913-297738623-1006\DC6\farmmext.cab'iA. Do you want to delete the whole file?" I said yes.

When I ran ActiveScan, it found two instances of Trj/Dropper.FQ, which were disinfected. It also found a bunch of spyware files, which it said it couldn't take care of unless I bought their software. I then used Spybot to see if I could locate them, and it didn't turn up anything.

The computer does seem to be running a bit more quickly now, although not as quickly as it did before all this mess. Loading my personal settings upon startup takes significantly longer, and the first message I get on the desktop always says "Error loading C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll. Specified module could not be found." Also, ever since removing the "Warning! Your computer is at risk!" spyware, I cannot get wallpaper back on my desktop. It is a gray background that I cannot change, no matter what I do.

So, I think we've made some progress, but it still looks like there are some issues. I'll attach my new logfile below. Thank you so much for your advice. I so appreciate your time and energy!

Hi thejenny100,
This will take some time to run through, Might be a good idea to print out these instructions, or save them to notepad some place you can access them for reference,
  • Please disable Microsoft AntiSpyware
  • Please set your system to show
    all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check mark next to the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [xjbptigg] c:\windows\system32\xjbptigg.exe

    Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

    Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

    RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
    c:\windows\system32\xjbptigg.exe

    Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

    Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

    Security IGuard
    Virtual Maid
    Search Maid

    Exit Add/Remove Programs.

    *IMPORTANT* Be sure you know how to VIEW HIDDEN FILES

    Press CTRL ALT DELETE to open Windows Task Manger. Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

    List any files going to be deleted that are running

    Exit Task Manager.

    *Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
    *Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
    *In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
    *In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

    C:\wp.exe
    C:\wp.bmp
    C:\Windows\sites.ini
    C:\Windows\popuper.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
    C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

    Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

    While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

    Make sure you can view hidden files.

    Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

    FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

    C:\Program Files\Search Maid
    C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
    C:\Windows\System32\Log Files <-WILL be there!
    C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

    Reboot into normal mode.

    *Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
    *Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
    *Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

    *Click the "Go" button.
    *It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
    *Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
    *If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
    *Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

    Reboot your computer again.

    1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

    2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf
    To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
    Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

    3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

    4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

    Post a new HiJackThis log.

Don 77 --

I appreciate all the time you are spending on this. I started following your most recent instructions, and ran into a snag fairly early.

I deleted the 3 items in Hijack This successfully. Then I rebooted into Safe Mode and used Windows Explorer to find and delete several instances of RUNDLL32.exe and then C:\ProgramFiles\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll. I couldn't locate cdaEngineMain or c:\windows\system32\xjbptigg.exe.

I then rebooted as normal and tried to open Add or Remove Programs, but I got the following message: "Windows cannot find 'rundll32.exe". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click Search." I'm supposed to be using Add or Remove PRograms to delete 3 programs -- Security IGuard, Virtual Maid, and Search Maid. I figured I better wait for advice from you before proceeding any further with your instructions. It looks like each step builds upon the last, and I wanted to make sure I did everything in order.

Sorry to be so difficult!

Hi Jenny.
We have to get this sqaured away here frist,

Then I rebooted into Safe Mode and used Windows Explorer to find and delete several instances of RUNDLL32.exe

RUNDLL32.exe is a needed windows file, Not your fault I should have been a little clearer on the instructions,

but I got the following message: "Windows cannot find 'rundll32.exe". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

Lets try a system restore to an earlier date , This means we will have to start the cleaning process all over but we need to do this in order to get your computer working properly,

1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.

2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.

3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.

4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.

5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.

6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page appears.

7. Click OK.

Let me know if your getting any error messages now please

Don --

Sorry 'bout that! As I said in my first e-mail, I'm a total novice. I did the system restore and I'm no longer getting the error messages.

Should I go back now and follow the last set of instructions? First question: When you say disable Microsoft Antispyware, do you mean click disable schedule so that it doesn't automatically conduct scans? Or should I delete the program? Do something else?

Second question: To avoid the same mistake we just corrected with the system restore, exactly which files/folders do I delete using Windows Explorer? I take it that I don't delete anything associated with RUNDLL32.exe, right?

Sorry to be such a pest.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:

Okay. . . I "fixed" 04-HKLM\..\Run: [xjbptigg] c:\windows\system32\xjbptigg.exe in HJT. I couldn't find it anywhere in Windows Explorer though. I rebooted into safe mode, checked that I could view all Hidden Files/Folders, and looked in the system 32 folder. When I couldn't find it, I did a search of the entire C:\ drive. No luck. Don't know what I'm doing wrong, if anything. The file doesn't seem to show up in the latest HJT logfile posted below, so maybe it's gone.

My computer is definitely better than it has been, although I still cannot put up a desktop background. I have a beige background that will not change to either the wallpaper that came with the computer or my personal picture files. And sometimes the icons flicker a little. That all started when I was finally able to remove the "Warning! Your computer is at risk!" black warning that had taken over my desktop background when I got the initial spyware. I think it was finally Microsoft Antispyware that got rid of the warning, but it left that beige background that cannot be changed. If we can't figure that out, though, that's fine. I can live with that. Other than that, things seem to be slower than they were prior to the initial spyware infection, but they are quicker than they were 2 or 3 weeks ago before you began helping me.

Here is the latest HJT logfile. And again, thanks!

OK Jenny,

Open Notepad, and copy EVERYTHING in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fix.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4":

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run]
"notepad.exe"=-
"notepad2.exe"=-
"winlogon.exe"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"WallpaperStyle"=-
"Wallpaper"=-
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=-
"NoDispAppearancePage"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"Wallpaper"=-
"WallpaperStyle"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-
"NoActiveDesktop"=-
"NoSaveSettings"=-
"ClassicShell"=-
"NoThemesTab"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoChangingWallPaper"=-

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

Reboot your computer.

Next,
Go Here download and install Cleanup!
Open up the program and click on the cleanup button, Let it do it’s thing.
It will ask you to reboot do so,
When the computer restarts it will open again again and finish running allow it to do so please,

Next,
Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Run a scan with Ad-aware and have it fix all it finds,

Let me know how your computer is running now

Don--

I followed all of your most recent instructions, which all went well. The AD-aware scan found no suspect files. Doesn't look like anything has changed though. Still can't change the wallpaper, which is totally something I can live with at this point. The computer is operating at a decent speed, so that's good.

Question for you. . . what exactly should I be doing to make sure that this sort of thing doesn't happen again? Which spyware/virus scanners should I run? How regularly?

Thanks!
Jenny
