User returned.

Let's get a fresh log and can you also update me on the problem's you are having.

Run OTL
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box paste this in the following.

    netsvcs
    drivers32
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\user32.dll /md5
    %systemroot%\system32\ws2_32.dll /md5

  • Under Extra Registry select Use Safelist
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them all in.

Hi,

Let's dig a bit deeper.

Download avz4.zip from HERE
  • Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window: Posted Image
  • Click Start to begin the update
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the "Advanced System Analysis with malware removal mode enabled" check box.
    Posted Image
  • Click on the “Execute selected scripts”.
  • Automatic scanning, healing and system check will be executed.
  • A logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be created and saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscure.zip.
  • It is necessary to reboot your machine, because AVZ might disturb some program operations (like antiviruses and firewall) during the system scan.
  • All applications will work properly after the system restart.

When restarted

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the “Advanced System Analysis" check box.
    Posted Image
  • Click on the "Execute selected scripts".
  • A system check will be automatically performed, and the created logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscheck.zip.

Attach both virusinfo_syscure.zip and virusinfo_syscheck.zip to your next post

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on Posted Image to insert the attachment into your post

Hi,

No evidence of malware on your system. Would you say that the problem started when you installed Zone Alarm? If yes, I suggest you uninstall it and see if the speed improves. Don't forget to re-enable the Windows firewall if you remove ZA.

There are also some very good tips here about dealing with slow PC's. Let me know how you get on with these.

Thanks hammerman, I will try this. Is there any other free firewall you recommend. I have tried both of the ones you put in your post (Online Armor and now Zone Alarm), and don't want to be without a good firewall. Thanks again for the help. :)

Hi,

Another good free firewall is PC Tools Firewall. Let me know if uninstalling ZA solves your problem.

hey hammerman. I haven't uninstalled ZA yet since I have been able to shutdown/restart without any hanging/loading problems. So I'm not sure if I need to uninstall ZA or not, but I can keep an eye on it. Thanks again for all of the help! :)

Hi,

Thanks for letting me know. I would leave ZA installed. Let's carry out a spring clean and remove the tools.

-- Step 1 --

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete clean

-- Step 2 --

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter

-- Step 3 --

Run OTL and press the CleanUp button. Please delete the AVZ folder.

I'll leave this topic open for a few days so let me know if you have any more problems. Note that I will be unavailable from 26th June - 4th July

hey hammerman - well I got to step 1. Downloaded and ran TFC, then re-started. Computer took 5 minutes to load up properly. I think it may be related to TFC/OTC, etc. When i downloaded those programs and ran them, and then they rebooted it took forever to startup again. Just hangs after I sign in on the main login in page and then will show the desktop (no icons), then loads the desktop, but no task bar items, then finally loads. Not sure where to go next...

Should i proceed to step 2?

Thanks :)

Hi,

Skip step 2 but carry out the OTL cleanup in step 3.

I think you should now open a topic on the XP forum here and ask for help with the slow startup as I don't think it's malware-related. Please post a link to this topic so the tech experts know what we've done.
