Hello All ~ thank you for taking the time to read this. Any help is greatly appreciated as I am in no way computer savy at all!

I have a dell inspiron 600m laptop that I cannot turn on. When I connect the ac adapter to the electrical outlet, the green light on the box comes on. However, once I then connect it to the back of the laptop, the green light goes off. I borrowed a friends dell ac adapter to see if that would work and help me get the computer on, but it did the exact same thing (green light goes off once connected to the back of the laptop).

I have absolutely no idea where to go or what to do from here. Should I be buying another ac adapter? Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

Hi ramona26 :)
Can you remove the battery & run the power cord direct to the computer.
If it works it may indicate a dead battery! how old is the battery?

Thank you so much for responding. I tried removing the battery like you suggested, but the a/c adapter still does the same thing. The green light goes off once it connects to the back of the laptop. The battery is 5 years old. Would you suggest that I purchase a new one?
Thanks again!

I would not suggest purchasing a new battery just yet as the problem
also occurs when the battery is not connected, this could point to a
defective power jack, plugging & unplugging the power adapter into the back
of the computer over a period of time, can wear away the contacts in
the back of the computer resulting in no power getting through or a
short circuit (the green light going out).
Plug in the AC adapter and see if there is any play in it, try moving
the jack around to see if any power gets through.
If this does turn out to be the problem, replacing the jack is a job
for a suitably qualified person.
The better a battery is looked after the longer it will last, an example
of this would not be leaving the battery attached when running the
computer using the AC adapter.

EDIT: I will now look for information on a possible jack plug fix.

Power jack problems are well documented and one of the most
common ones I have found is that the solder connections on
the jack and motherboard can become detached after a period
of time.
So you have a better understanding of what may need to be done
to resolve the issue I have provided a link for you to look at.
Is there a local reputable computer repair agent that you could
ask for honest advice on any repair and subsequent cost.
