Good day everyone. I have taken the steps that were suggested in cleaning the infected computer I was working on and I still have trouble. I have a Hijackthis log I'll post at the bottom shortly.

This is the main problem I'm having: Everything I try to run crashes almost. Here is an example of the message when I try to run something - The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005) click ok to terminate the application. Thats basically the message I get if I try to do anything. AIM works, and some other things work but not much. Internet Explorer crashes as well. When the computer boots up I get the blue screen of death talking about the Trojan_Spy.html.smitfraud.c and it says to scan with virus scan and spyware, most of which crash when attempted to open. The ones that work haven't gotten the baddie. So here is a hijack this log, maybe someone can figure out this puzzle, I'm rather stuck.

Hi Josey_strife,

We are sorry to have missed your log due to heavy traffic.

I will help you clean your PC :tazz:

While your log is quite old, I do see a few issues with it. Before I suggest any fixes, I would need a fresh Hijack This log.

There is another big problem with your PC. You have two anti-virus programs running - McAfee and Norton. Please understand that having more than one anti-virus programs installed and running on your PC doesnt offer any additional protection to your PC.

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please deactivate one of them - either McAfee or Norton, the choice is yours- as the first step. After the deactivation, run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log here.

Here is a fresh hijack this log. Hopefully it will shed some light on things. I'd turn off all the antivirus except one, but I can't get around much with just CTRL+ALT+Delete (task manager) it won't let me get to the control panel either, alot of things crash when I try to open them e.g.: adaware SE. Thanks in advance :tazz:

Hi Josey_Strife,

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Alright, I took care of the things you said and managed to take out the smitfraud it looks like. However I'm still stumped! D'oh! I now get a blue background and the desktop doesn't load. I am currently scanning with ewido and adaware SE won't work...This is the error message I get if I try to do just about anything (Internet, different folders and such, Aol Instant Messenger works though...) This is the message : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005) click ok to terminate the application. Thats basically the message I get if I try to do anything. Hopefully Something can be done to fix it, I just thought it was the smitfraud causing that... Here is a fresh HJT log: :tazz:

Hi,

You still have traces of smitfraud on your PC.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid
PSGuard
AdwareDelete

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\zloader3.exe
C:\Windows\System32\hhk.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\System32\perfcii.ini
C:\Windows\System32\oleadm.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oleadm32.dll

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard
C:\Program Files\PSGuard
C:\Program Files\AdwareDelete

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Ok, I used the smitrem, but I can't run adaware because it says it failed to initialize properly. I also couldn't use the panda scan, it said the same thing, and I can't access the control panel because I can only go through task manager, and it doesn't find control panel either :tazz:. Heres a new hijack this log, maybe there is something else. I'm lost! arrrgh!

We'll need to transport some files from the computer you are now using, to your infected computer.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
So you'll get a new folder called smitrem on your desktop.
I want you to put that folder on cd, floppy or usb-stick.

On your infected computer, boot again in safe mode and open your task manager again.
Now insert the cd, floppy or usb-stick where you saved the smitrem folder in your infected computer.

In your Task Manager, click 'applications' (first tab).
Click the New Task button.
Cick browse.

Now browse to the drive where your floppy, usb-stick or cd is present (could be A or D or E or F.. you'll see..)
Search for that smitrem folder.
Right click on the smitrem folder and choose: Copy

Now browse again via Task Manager to My Documents or Program Files.
Right click somewhere in there, right click and choose: Paste
Now open the smitrem folder you just copied and pasted and click the file: RunThis.bat
Then click open.
In the window where it says 'Create new task', click OK.

Normally, you'll have to drag the different windows you'll see to left or to right, because normally they will open on top of each other and you wont see the command window the tool starts that is under it.
You'll see a blue window now.
Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete.

When done, in Task Manager, click 'shut down' from the menu on top and click restart. Your computer will reboot now.
Reboot to normal mode and post a hijackthis log in your next reply.

:tazz: Alright! Thanks Metallica for reopening the thread! I have wonderful news! I was a little worried because I followed the steps, and it seems that it did not work. However, I rebooted and voila! Things are in working order! Thank you so much Tampabelle and the rest of the gtg site for the wonderful feedback! I was very stumped but it appears everything is alright. Thank you so much! Hopefully I won't have another major problem like the smitfraud in the future, but I'll keep in touch if I do. You contribute a great service to many people, and bless all of you for having this site.
