I need some help, please!

My system seems to be afflicted with CoolWebSearch. Symptoms: black screen desktop, sometimes with text, shortcuts blink in and out, black background blinks alternately with image that should be there, no desktop tab on desktop properties dialog where a background can be chosen, get repeated error message: "Internet Explorer cannot find the Active Desktop HTML file. This file is needed for your active desktop".

I use AOL v9.0 SE. The AOL Spyware Protection scan cleaned several files and now finds only two items: CoolWebSearch and CoolWebSearch.SearchMeUp. It does not delete them. CWShredder has been run but does not find the versions present, reporting that CWS is not found on the system.

The following scans have been run and clean-up done: McAfee virus protection, Spybot, Ad-Aware.

Here’s the HJT log:

Hello ogotskeeg,

Welcome to GeekstoGo my name is Snickets and I will be helping you today!!!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
===================================================
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TCjAg6K] C:\WINDOWS\iumkxtx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfAccuracy] C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy\SAcc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atit] C:\WINDOWS\atit.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard spyware remover] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe

After checking these entries CLOSE ALL open windows [browsers and programs] EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked."
===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present).
SurfAccuracy
PSGuard

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please delete these files and folders using Windows Explorer(if present):
files=blue
folders=red

C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy\
C:\Program Files\PSGuard\
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\atit.exe

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello ogotskeeg,

1.Run HijackThis and place a check next to the following items.
Optional-
Fixing them here will not prevent you from opening them manually as needed. Your choice to fix based on your needs:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
(Description: RealPlayer system tray application. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office Startup Assistant. This program loads some Microsoft Office components into memory, even if you're not currently using MS Office. Removing this unnecessary program will free up a considerable amount of system resources.)

2.Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders

3.Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start tapping press F8 key.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

4.Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present).
180searchassistant
Power Scan
SideFind
nCase

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

5.Please delete these files and folders using Windows Explorer(if present):
files=blue
folders=red
C:\PROGRAM FILES\180searchassistant
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Power Scan
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SideFind

6.Please reboot your computer at this time.

7.Download: CCleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/
http://www.filehippo...d_ccleaner.html

Once installed, launch CCleaner:
Do not change any settings, except to make sure on the Options tab>Advanced "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" is NOT checked.
Click Run Cleaner (bottom right). When finished> Exit (top right) (reboot)

8.Once back in normal mode please rescan with hijack this and post a fresh log for me to review.

I would also like to know how the system is running at this time.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hi Snickets,

During Add/Remove Programs, I saw none of the 4 you listed, but I did not recognize these:

OnTrack SystemSuite
NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP nForce Drivers
Pure Networks Port Magic
Yahoo! Install manager (we're not on Yahoo)

This is not to say that the above are necessarily problems.

I did find and delete the three folders you listed. Ran CCleaner.

Here's the HJT scan:

Hello ogotskeeg,

These four items are legitimate items and need to be on the system.
OnTrack SystemSuite
NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP nForce Drivers
Pure Networks Port Magic
Yahoo! Install manager (we're not on Yahoo)

Open HJT and make sure all browsers and windows are closed except for hijackthis and click "Do a system scan only" and put a check next to the following:

Maybe you installed this yourself, but it is known to be illegal. I would fix it.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: reset5 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\reset5.dll

Then click Fix Checked.

After that, reboot into Safe Mode by restarting the computer; then repeatedly hit F8 while rebooting until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu. Use the arrow keys to highlight safe mode from the menu and press Enter.

Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders

Now please search for and delete the following file if found:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\reset5.dll

Reboot your computer into normal windows at this time.

Please rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log for me to review.

Thank you,

Snickets

Snickets,

I don't know how reset5.dll got there, but it's gone now.

Hello ogotskeeg,

Congratulations your log appears to be clean!!!

Please follow these directions below to clear out your system restore points and also make sure to read the prevention tips on how to prevent further infection on your p.c.

1.One last step to take in fixing your computer.
After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot.
Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

2.Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab
Check the following:
Do not Show hidden files and folders
Hide protected operating system files
Click on Apply.
Close out the search window.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thank you,

Snickets

Snickets,

I did the two remaining steps you posted. I'll look through the software and related recommendations. The IE/Spyad link didn't seem to work, but I'm sure the others offer good measures to help avoid future problems.

Hopefully, I won't have to, but if need be, I'll seek help from GeeksToGo again.

Thank you for the time and patience in analyzing my problem and providing understandable steps to an effective solution.
