Hi and Happy New Year,

I have:
Windows XP Home version. I have all the updates except the most recent for XP because of it's problems.
AVG anti ivrus free version updated daily. I haven't upgraded yet
Zone Alarm, free version, updated
Spybot, 1.2 updated

I picked up Admilli and noticed a number of new things in my Startup such as Bargains and Bundle and salm.exe. I made sure they were all enabled before coming here for help.
I ran AVG and Spybot. Zone Alarm is not allowing anything to call home.

I'm not experiencing any particluar problem but know I should get rid of the spywares and trojans before inevitable problems start happening. I picked up all the new stuff when I visted a site the other day that gave translations of phrases in another language. I thought the program I was downloading was supposed to be for using the site. I was a real dope.

Here is the HJT log:

Hi Coachwife,

I'm going to do all this today. But I was studying the process since it's the first time I've done this. I have a question about this step:

"Please delete your temporary files. Double Click [b]My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you"

I took a look at the Disk Cleanup. When I click this option in Properties, it first tries to do a calculation of how much space can be saved. I closed the window right away since this was only a dry run to get familiar with all the steps. Will I see the 3 things I'm supposed to check after it does its calculation? That being the Downloaded Program Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin?

I just thought that maybe I was supposed to see them as soon as I clicked on Disk Cleanup in Properties. So I thought I better ask before launching HijackThis and getting started.

Thanks for your help,
Eleny

You were on the right track. Just let it finish scanning and then it will ask you for that option. :tazz:

Thanks! AVG is just now doing its daily scan. As soon as it's finished, I'm going offline and will start all this.

With sweaty palms and thoughts of appreciation,

I have another question.

I followed your instructions and am now running Ad-Aware. It did its initial scan where you see the file names as they're being scanned. Now, the Ad-Aware window is showing that it's "Busy" and also that it's "Performing conditional scans". However, there's no activity showing. It's been running for a couple of hours. I did a Ctrl/Alt/Delete and that indicates that Ad Aware is running. So, it's not hung up.

Note that when AVG does its daily scan, it takes over an hour. I have a large drive and it's half full. So, I'm used to waiting and will continue to let Ad Aware do its thing. I was just thinking that it felt unusual for a scan to take several hours so far and still not be finished. Should I just keep waiting?

Btw, FYI - I didn't have everything you suggested to check in the Ad Aware settings. Under Advanced settings There wasn't the following listed:
-Include additional process information
-Include additional file information

But it did have these and I checked them:
-Include environment information
-Incllude additional object information
-Include negligible details

Also, under Start there was no "Activate in-depth Scan. But I could tell it to "Use Custom Scanning Options".

The copy of Ad Aware that I downloaded from this Geeks To Go site is Ad Aware SE Personal.

Thanks,
Eleny

Last night I stopped Ad Aware and restarted it. I let it run overnight but it's still not completed. It says it's Busy and Performing conditional scans. Seems like it can't finish its work. Can you please advise me on what to do?

I think Admilli is now gone. I went offline, closed donw Zone Alarm and AVG and ran HijackThis again. Actually, I went through all your first instructins agains. AdAware still wasn't able to complete. So, I ran Spybot. it got rid of some sort of Shop at Home software.

I opened End it All and Admilli is not listed there and I ran HijackThis for the log and here is the final log that shows Admilli gone. Unless there's something else that shouldn't be there?

Run Hijack This.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe
(Description: PowerRegister registration reminder.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINNT\UpdReg.EXE
(Description: A small program that reminds you to register your Creative Labs product (i.e. sound card, video card). Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINNT\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
(Description: Nvidia system tray applet. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [GWMDMMSG] GWMDMMSG.exe
(Description: Used with internal modems on Gateway and vprMatrix PCs. This is the "GTW modem messaging applet" and is not required for the modem to work correctly. Removing this entry will free up some system resources. )

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.exe.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
(Description: Adjusts monitor colours across all programs, including Photoshop. It is needed by some graphics professionals who want their monitor calibrated. Most home users will not need it, and thus should remove this entry. )

Reboot.

How is the computer running?

Hi!

I just followed your latest instructions - except that I kept the last item. I'm a digital artist and decided to keep the monitor calibration. I'm getting the hang of this!

After doing this latest HijackThis task the computer is shutting down and starting up at blazing speed compared to before. Some time ago, I changed a Registry item. It's the one where you change a digit so the computer checks for some files at shutdown and deletes them if necessary. So that slows down the shutdown a wee bit. But now it shuts down quicker and the startup is shazzam!

Thanks a million!!! ;)

I have two more questions.
When I run Spybot, all I get is one item now. It's one that always showed up in the past, too. It's a Microsoft weak spot called DSO Exploit:
HKEY_Users\5-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Wondows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\Zones\0\1004=W-3

I did some reading and learned that if 1004 is changed to 3, it can fix this. But I didn't do a thing. First, I already saw the "=3" on the end and figured that this might already be the 3 in the instruction. And I wasn't quite sure if I was supposed to change the 1004 to a 3. So better to wait until we were finished and I could ask you about it. Should I just live with it and not worry?

Also, what is your opinion of Mozilla's Firefox? I couldn't find any threads about it here in the forums.

And please accept my appreciation for your help. You're so patient and it helped me to be brave about cleaning things up! :tazz:
