Like many others, I am suffering from an alemod infection of wininet.
wininet can not be cleaned, quarantined or deleted.

I am also plagued by PSGuard that no matter how many times I remove it, will reappear time and time again.

I have used Spybot, Adaware and McAfee Virus scans but can not remove the virus.

My HijackThis log is below.

Please can somebody help me?

Thanks,
jacsnac

Welcome to GTG.

This is going to get ugly...try to follow the steps I listed below in the order I posted them in. You shouldn't run into problems...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip the files to a folder on your Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update button to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\onxtv.dll/sp.html#83556
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\onxtv.dll/sp.html#83556

O16 - DPF: {41F17733-B041-4099-A042-B518BB6A408C} - http://appldnld.m7z....iTunesSetup.exe

O16 - DPF: {FFFF0003-0001-101A-A3C9-08002B23E0CD} - http://direct.data-line.us/gba938.exe

Delete this file if found -> c:\explorer.cab

Run AboutBuster and click Begin Removal button. Once that's done, just hit the OK button. Click Exit once you are done. Click the OK button and it should exit. Open up the 'Ab LogFile.txt' (which was created in the same folder as AboutBuster) and post the log here.

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop (or Appearance)->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido.

I have noticed that there are Registry Keys (from ewido) and Files (from panda) that have not been cleaned. Is this a problem?

With respect to the initial fault, the virus has been cleaned and PSGuard has not returned (yet!) :)

Thanks.

We'll take care of those now :tazz:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ and delete PSGuard.com

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\eglivecam_1029.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ptainfo1.ico
C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt
C:\PROGRAM FILES\C2Media
C:\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\Complinksetupacid\
C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\appoz32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ShellExt\CNTR.EXE

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Restart and boot into Safe Mode again. Run Ewido scan and save the report.

Restart and go back to Normal Mode. Run a Panda scan. Post that Panda log along with the Ewido log and a new HijackThis log.
