Hello all,

I had a nasty msblank infection a while back that--thanks to the posts on this forum--I was
I think able to remove.

The only remaining legacy of this infection is that--despite clean scans in Ad-Aware, SpyBot and
NoAdware (a less-than-great program, I know, but I installed it so I figure why not use it), Ewido continues to pick up 18 infections of "trojandownloader.agent.uj" in memory that it is unable to clean.

If my readings of this and other fora are any indication, this symptom seems to be a relatively new phenomena (oldest post I saw was from late September '05) and there doesn't seem to be much consensus among helpers as to whether this is an Ewido false positive or cause for alarm.

I have disabled Windows XP System Restore, which I have read has solved this problem for some people, but it hasn't fixed the issue for me.

Below is my HJT log and Ewido report. Any guidance would be much appreciated!!!

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.gee.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{01810938-379E-458B-ABC4-392A73639F4F}: NameServer = 85.255.114.29,85.255.112.152
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1413E53C-C285-4835-BA50-D498005B5717}: NameServer = 85.255.114.29,85.255.112.152
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{856C0760-5FE3-4BAC-9AB8-848D82F26195}: NameServer = 85.255.114.29,85.255.112.152
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{01810938-379E-458B-ABC4-392A73639F4F}: NameServer = 85.255.114.29,85.255.112.152

Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

Wow--thanks. It's a jungle out there, apparently.

I did all that you instructed and also ran ewido and several previously undetected spyware programs became visible. After cleaning them, I now (at long last) have a clean scan on ewido.

My HJT file and ewido scan file are below. Any other things you would suggest I do?

Thank you so much for your help!

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmtcj.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmtcj.exe
After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Then reboot your computer.

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan: Panda ActiveScan

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log in your next reply.

Sure enough, PandaScan flagged as malware one cookie and three very small .exe files in System32. I deleted them in Safe Mode (sorry--it only occurs to me now as I type this that the info might be useful for posterity but I just hated to have them on my computer for one extra minute) and then had to re-delete them from my RECYCLER directory. One of the four recycle bin files would not delete from the RECYCLER directory (even in Safe Mode) because Windows said the file was "in use".

However, my PandaScan is now completely clean and my Ewido scan remains clean.

Here is my HTJ log:

This log looks clean!
  • Don't forget to re-hide all files and folders. To re-hide all files and folders:
    • Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    • Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Click Yes to confirm.
    • Click OK.
  • This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts.

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
