Try to get a windows xp disk from somewhere. Without it it will be very difficult to fix your problem. If you get one, run the process that will repair your internet explorer.

Lifeinbone,

did you install Windows twice, or reinstall it before? Or do you have 2 versions of Windows?

Please go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup Recovery Settings. Click on the Default operating system drop down menu. Write down the entries you see there and include that in your reply to me.

And finally, right-click on the Windows folder and select properties. Write down the size, # of files, and # of folders. Do the same thing for the other windows folder (the one you said was WINDOWS.1) Include that info in your reply to me.

Current items in drop menu in order are as follows:
"Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (bootscreen)"/fastdetect/KERN
"Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
"Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
"Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
-

WINDOWS Folder:
Size: 1.76 GB
Size on disk: 1.38 GB
Contains: 19,158 Files. 570 Folders

WINDOWS1 Folder:
Size: 10.6 GB
Size on disk: 2.24 GB
Contains: 13,768 Files. 770 Folders.
-
Now..im not sure if this has any signifigance to the problem. The WINDOWS.1 folder name cannot be changed(light grey color.) The WINDOWS folder name can be. Also, the WINDOWS folder has a customize tab, as the WINDOWS.1 doesnt.

I suggested a repair of internet explorer. Have you tried that? If you did and it didn't solve the problem I would try: start > run > sfc /scannow. Run the process till it ends. it takes sometime. I hope the disk you got will conform the xp installation in your computer. If the disk that you got is the same one that was used in the original installation of your computer you can try a repair installation of xp as described in the first, pinned, thread of this forum.

The Skeptic: Your suggestion is a good one, but there's 4 incidents of XP in System Properties and 2 Windows folders on this machine. I think it would be wise to get THIS issue cleared up before worrying too much about repairing anything.

The Wiz is from the midwest...it'll probably be a couple hours at least before he logs back on.

Let's get him the boot.ini information...I'm sure he'll want to look at that after seeing your System Properties post.

Click Start, then Run, type msconfig, and click "OK". Click the BOOT.INI tab and post everything in the white box just as it appears beginning with the line [boot loader].

I think i found wat u are looking for elsewhere....

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (bootscreen)" /fastdetect /KERNEL=kernel1.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.1="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

*mind you..thats not from msconfig..it is from controlpanel>system>advanced>settings>edit

'msconfig' is not recognized as an internal or external command. operable program or batchfile.

I beleive that means the file is missing.

*no it doesnt bring it up :tazz:
