Hi my computer's been acting up recently.I'll try to describe everything with as much detail as possible. The problems are that the computer is very slow at start up and while I use it. At first I thought it was a hardware problem but the comp shows that everything is working properly. Also the sound is scratchy and skips often. Suspecting that it may be an infection, I ran some virus scans. With AVG, the scanning suddenly stops. It shows the time but it doesn't scan anymore files. When I ran Cool Web Search it reported that I was infected with msconfig.exe or something like that. Spybot search and destroy reported no infections. Also when I run some programs, the computer becomes unbearably laggy so I open task manager. Sometimes it shows the computer running at 100% with only a few programs running. In addition a program shows up as vsmon.exe(I don't know what that is) which takes up much memory and hen I try to end it, a message saying acess denied, I have to log on as an administrator to perform the task. I'm always logged on as an admin. The problems occured on 2/14/06 after I arrived from school. I left the comp on because I was dl something and realized it was really slow. Afterwards I attempt to play a media file and the sound is messed up. The only hardware updates I've made were after the problems began. System restore is not an option as it was off at the time.

Please help me. Here is a hijack this report:

First. I'd like you to undo the changes you made to your startups.
It obviously didn't help and I'd like to get a full picture.

FYI: vsmon.exe is a process that belongs to ZoneAlarm.

Also go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Here is the scan result:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware program Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\logs1.ini
Potentially unwanted tool:application/myway Not disinfected HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MYWAYSEARCHASSISTANTDE.AUXILIARY.1
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Roddy Morel\Desktop\Unused Desktop Shortcuts\smitRem\Process.exe
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Roddy Morel\Desktop\Unused Desktop Shortcuts\smitRem.exe[Process.exe]

Sorry, I noticed what vsmon.exe was after posting.
As for start up changes even when I only load the basic things the computer still slows down.

Well, Panda doesn't show anything major.

Can you tell which process is gobbling up all the CPU time and/or memory?

That was fast :tazz:. Right now the computer is running at about 10% - 25%. The processes taking up the most memory are Azureus.exe, firefox.exe, and vsmon.exe(processes that I have been running before the problems started). The only thing I can think of that might affect the computer is that I leave the computer on for extended periods of time with a file sharing program running. Also something I noticed is that the sound problems I'm having are related to the speed of my computer. Could something be damaged?

Thank you for your time.

Well. As far as I know Azureus is BitTorrent.

You can start a thread in the hardware forums if you like.
But the speed problems can be solved only in a way you won't be happy about, I think.

Filesharing is dangerous, resource-heavy (and very often illegal).
