ipod says "cannot read from or write to disk", itunes recognizes ipod when plugged in but when i try to load files in

i am out of ideas... i have reloaded itunes several times and run apples setup and reload programs for the ipod. i sent in my old ipod for a new one and it says the same thing so it seems to me it might be in my usb port. my computer is about 6 months old and it just started about 2 weeks ago. i hope someone out there can help me cuz work just seems to long with out my tunes to pass the time away
