Another Trojan.Vundo victim - No safe mode! [RESOLVED]

First of all, if this has already been answered elsewhere, I sincerely apologize. I did a search, but was unable to find a solution to my particular problem.

I, too, have contracted the Trojan.Vundo virus. I have found detailed (and VERY helpful, I might add!) instructions as to how to remove the pest, but I am unable to perform any of these operations because I cannot function in safe mode. Each time I try booting up in safe mode, explorer does not boot up, so I am left staring at a blank screen with just the info in the four corners. No taskbar, no start menu, no programs. I am able to access the task manager through CTRL+ALT+DEL, and have tried to manually run explorer or explorer.exe through that. Each time I do, the message that I'm running in safe mode flashes onto the screen but does not remain long enough for me to read it or respond "Yes" or "No." The screen remains black and empty.

I have tried everything I can think of to get explorer to work in safe mode, and none of it is doing the trick. Any advice or a link to a previous discussion on the topic would be VERY much appreciated!

How about Safe Mode with Command Prompt? Try that...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\efecb.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\bcefe.*
* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Download and install CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thanks for the great instructions! I still am unable to do anything in safe mode. I have tried every safe mode option, and explorer won't load with any of them, so I am stuck with the black screen. If I can pull up Task Manager, is it possible to run everything necessary by choosing New Task? It would be a bit trickier, but as long as I write down everything before I restart into safe mode I should be able to pull it off. Would I just be able to type in "KillVundo.bat" in the run dialog box after selecting new task? Or do I need some sort of directory information in there with it?

Hi Brianna, explorer won't run from Task Manager (File->New Task) either? If not, then yes, try doing everything from Task Manager.

No, you need to type in the full path to the KillVundo.bat file. For example, I think it would probably be something like this:

c:\documents and settings\ryan and brianna\desktop\vundofix\KillVundo.bat

Delete these if found:

C:\WINDOWS\browserxtras\
C:\WINDOWS\inf\twaintec.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yabxv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vxbay - delete any files that begin with vxbay

Check and fix this in HijackThis:

O23 - Service: Rans498ogic - Sonic Solutions - (no file)

Restart and run a new Panda scan. Anything else found? If not, then:

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
