I have discovered malware on my computer and want to remove it. So far I have done the downloaded and run the
ATF cleaner program, have scanned/removed with SuperAntiSpyware, and done most of a Panda PC Scan, which
still showed malware. I want to run HiJackThis, but I have a problem...
I used to have Norton AntiVirus installed and running on my computer. I believe that I 'partially' deleted the Norton
AntiVirus a while back. Symantec Live Update still shows on my system, though I don't think its currently in use, and
Norton AntiVirus still shows on the Add/Remove programs list. Nothing happens when I click the 'change' or 'remove'
buttons on the Add/Remove menu.
Under C:\ProgramFiles\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus there is a file called "Quarantine" which is the only file
in the folder I name. It contains 123 GB!! of files. It is so large that WindowsExplorer gets 'stuck' when I try to open the
file. Not having the expertise, I have no idea what is in this file. Research online suggests that some of these files might
be important system files, that I wouldn't want to delete.
The problem is, the file is so large that every Scanning/Removing process I use takes hours to process this file. I
want to delete the file so that any anti malware programs I run can do their jobs faster, but I don't know if its safe.
I no longer have NortonAntiVirus on the compute [at least I can't find an .exe file for it or much else] so I have no way
of examining the individual files in "Quarantine" to delete the ones that are safe to delete. What can I do to safely
remove the files ? If I downloaded Norton AntiVirus again would it have access to this old "Quarantine" file ? Should I
just throw the whole thing in the recycle bin? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also I have the logs for the SuperAntiSpyware and the partial Panda Scan if you need them, but I don't think that will
help with my current problem.

Hi openmindedlogic welcome to geekstogo :)

Files that are in quarantine are not system files they are malware.
If you no longer want Norton then I suggest that you use their product removal tool.
You can find it Here.

After that since you will have no Anti virus protection the first thing I will need you to do is to download this anti-virus program and install it.
This is free.
AVG free
=====================================================================
After that * Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Hijack This.
  • Click on I agree
  • Then Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Thanks much Kadah.
I deleted the "Quarantine" file without any issues. I then downloaded, not AVG, but another one of this site's
recommended Anti-Virus programs, Avast!. I did a scan with avast and deleted all the files it found. Then I downloaded
HijackThis and did the Scan. Here is the log, If you can see anything that needs fixing, please let me know. Thanks
again:

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\mqvxensm.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqtwa.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqtwa.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qti55a2j.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe

Drivers to unload:
igsqixvp

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Hi, I have a major problem now. I downloaded and ran the avenger program using the script you gave me. Now I can no longer
log into my computer!!! Avenger said it would reboot my computer and I selected yes. Afterwards, at the log in screen, every time
I type in my password and try to load windows, it says 'loading your profile' and suddenly the screen flashes and says 'saving
your settings, logging off' [or something similar]. I can't get in under any user account, my own, or even a default 'administrator'
account. I can't get in in 'safe mode' either and I tried selecting 'go to last known good configuration' in the boot menu, but that
didn't work either. In any case, it imeddiately restarts the computer as soon as I try to log in under an account. Please help me to
undo this.

Try to booot into the last know good Configuration.
It is a screenthat will appear after you repeatedly press F8.
It is listed under the options of Safe Mode and SAfe mode with NEtworking etc..
See if that will work.

See if you can boot into Safe mode with Command prompt.
If you can type in this Chkdsk /f /r type in Y at the prompt then reboot let that run and let me know how it goes.

Do you have the Recovery Console installed on your computer?

By the way it is the malware that has caused this not the Avenger.
Sometimes when you try to remove stubborn malware it hooks into the system in such a way that it cannot be removed with out some kind of damage.

Let me know how it goes.

I can't boot into safe mode with command prompt either. It just immediately logs me off, although I see a brief image of the command prompt
right before the blue windows 'logging off' screen comes back up and the computer restarts.
I don't know if I have a 'recovery console', but hopefully you can tell me if I do.
The options on the 'f8' screen are:

safemode (tried)
safemode with networking
safemode with command prompt (tried)

enable boot log (tried)
enable VGA mode (tried)
last known good configuration (tried)
Directory Service restore mode (I tried this, and the same things happens)
Debug mode (tried)
Disable automatic restart on system failure

Start normally
reboot
return to OS choices menu

There is also another menu under setup [F12 or f2] which has other options, but I'm not sure any of them are helpful here:
On the Boot Device Menu I see:
onboard or uSB floppy drive
onboard sata hard drive
onboard or usb cd-rom drive
system setup
hard drive diagnostics
boot to utility partition

Under system setup I see options under:
system
drives
onboard devices
video
performance
security
power management
maintenance
POST behavior

I'm not sure what these options do though.

Do you have an XP cd?

Recovery Console would be listed under your Operarting Syatem choices aka>return to OS choices
It would say Recovery Console underneath your Operating System name.

LEt me know if you have the cd it would also be known as a restore disk.

ALso do you have a Recovery Partition installed?
Is this computer an HP?

This computer is a Dell. It says "Optiplex Gx280" on the box. I found a cd which had the Dell logo on it that said it could be used to reinstall
Windows XP and I was able to use it to get into the recovery console. I used the command "chkdsk /p" which said that it found one or more
errors "on the volume". Also, the "group policy settings" for the recovery console are such that I can't use the "set" command and I don't
have access to all the files and folders on the system. I don't know if that will be a problem.

I don't know if I have a "recovery partition" installed, but I could check if you could tell me how. I'm not sure how to continue from here..
Should I try to delete the file that I installed Avenger to?

Boot in to the Recovery Console and type in chkdsk /f /r then Y at the prompt and then reboot then let checkdisk run and complete.

See if that will fix the issue.

Let me know.

I ran 'chkdsk /r' from the recovery console. The switch "/f" is not supported by the recovery console command interpreter, as I found out using the
"help" command in the recovery console. The only supported switches are "/r" and "/p". "/r" "locates bad sectors and recovers readable information".
I ran this command and about 2 hrs later it completed indicating how many bytes were available and how many were in use in the 'volume'. I then
exited and tried to log in, but the same thing happened. The problem wasn't fixed.
