memory problem, memory question

OS: windowsxp



I have gone back to school and money is tight. My computer is a emachine and is really short on memory (250 RAM) the software I need for school requires at least 550 RAM. My question is, could I take the the memory out of an emachine that I no longer use and insert it into my present computer rather than buying a new memory componet?
