hi!
i discovered winfixer on my laptop this past weekend, and have literally spent the past 2 days trying to remove it. i have taken the following steps 5x over, to no avail: 1. run --> "cleanmgr" 2. adaware se scan, clean, and reboot as many times as needed until the scan runs clean 3. spybot scan, fix, and reboot until the scan runs clean 4. mcafee virus scan (tried housecall and panda, too) 5. avg virus scan 6. mcafee stinger i thought i was finally clean as of last night until i jumped back online this morning to work (i do graphic design / web development, and the internet is crucial to my work) and the popups came back to haunt me. can anyone help me? thank you so much in advance.. ashley Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 11:31:42 AM, on 3/22/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\WLKeeper.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ZcfgSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Intel\Wireless\Bin\1XConfig.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgupsvc.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcdetect.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\OasClnt.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mctskshd.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe c:\program files\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfService.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ifrmewrk.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apntex.exe C:\Program Files\Musicmatch\Musicmatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\NICCONFIGSVC\NICCONFIGSVC.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue\ControlPanel\VersionCueTray.exe C:\Program Files\Maxtor\OneTouch\utils\Onetouch.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\RetroExpress.exe C:\WINDOWS\MXOALDR.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Photo AIO Printer 942\dlbubmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Photo AIO Printer 942\dlbubmon.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Photo AIO Printer 942\memcard.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SpamKiller\MskAgent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\mps\mscifapp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgcc.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfAgent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SpamKiller\MSKSrvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\retrorun.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Ashley Rossi\Desktop\HijackThis.exe R1 - Hello again Ashley
That looks great - nice to see. One minor adjustment to make: Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following: O2 - BHO: RawExecAction Object - {18898424-E3AB-4BA9-8E8D-5434B1CECA75} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcd.dll (file missing) Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis. Post back a fresh (final) HijackThis log, from normal mode, and I will take another look. |

Congratulations! your new log is clean.
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.) To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. (Windows XP) 1. Turn off System Restore.
Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore.
Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK. I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean: SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. MICROSOFT ANTISPYWARE - With daily updates and scans, this programme offers good security against malware. AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer. FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser. AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one. ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall). Remember to update these frequently. Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well cause conflicts and slowness. You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer. Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. QUOTE was that file considered a virus... or spyware? just curious. The difference is the ability to replicate, so in that sense it is malware not a virus. But Vundo is a tough one and very unpredictable; there are a few members of staff that won't do them, and I must admit, I have had more trouble with Vundo than any other malware.Well, it just remains for me to wish you happy safe surfing Ashley. |

i cannot thank you enough for your help - expect my donation shortly!
it's nice to know that there are technically savvy people, like yourself, using their knowledge and experience for good cause... it's unfortunate that there are people out there who are intelligent enough to write viruses, malwares, and spywares strong enough to take the average user down for weeks or even permanently... it's a well known fact that there is a fine line between genius and insanity, and i'm betting that most of these virus authors fall on the insanity side of the line. anyway, i will follow the remaining steps carefully, and hopefully will remain clean from this point on! thanks again, ashley |

i actually did run into a slight problem when i unchecked my "turn off system restore"... upon reboot, i got a blue screen stating that windows cannot open. did a hard shut down, then tried again in safe mode, but i got the same screen. so, upon the next reboot, i selected "last known working configuration (or something to that effect)"... did i mess anything up...?
it seems to be running fine, but i'm not sure i can reset my restore points...? |

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK. I have never had that problem before from those instructions, so I am at a loss to understand what has happened, but if you can't clean them out by deletion, then leave them alone and just create a new restore point (call it post viral). To do that go to START>PROGRAMS>ACCESORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>SYSTEM RESTORE>CREATE A NEW RESTORE POINT. HTH |
