problems with Add/remove system restore and more

okay many of these issues seem to have started when I un-installed AOE3 the trial version. the day after i went to use Microsoft Works Word Processor. and I got a error saysing. "This application has failed to start because Msi.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem" so I went to add/remove programs and I got a error saying something like windows installer is not installed. so I went and looked how to fix that.. went through the steps of fixing that. restarted my computer. and went to click on add/remove programs under control panel. and it will no longer open.

So then I had the bright idea of doing a system restore. and everything before the day of the uninstall of AOE3 is gone. and so I went to do the system restore to the day I uninstalled it. and I click the date. click the first next. then where it goes to the page that gives you the warnings. and says you wont lose documents and e=mails and I click next and it goes no further. does nothing. here is my hijack report... please help

Did you start the system restore in "normal" user mode or safe mode?

If not read below how to start in safe mode command prompt and complete a system restore.


1/ Re-boot your PC

2/ As the PC is booting up keep tapping the F8 button

3/ When the Option Menu appears on screen select the Safe Mode with Command prompt option

4/ At the safe mode command prompt type: %systemroot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

5/ System Restore will now open and you can choose the relevant restore point

I did it both in normal windows and in safe mode. when doing it in safe mode it did the same thing. it did the first screen where you say if you want to create a restore point or restore to a earlier date. I click restore to a earlier date. then it comes to the screen where you pick the date. and I pick a date and click next. then it gives you the warning. on the third it gives you the warning... and from there it goes no further. when I click next it does nothing.

okay. I went to do a disk defrag and it does not work either. when you click analyze or defragment it does not do anything.

anybody else have any ideas? it seems to be getting worse. I have a lot of programs that don't seem to work anymore... please help me

try pressing ctrl alt and delete does that open your task manager
if it does ...click file New Task(RUN) type this in

appwiz.cpl

see if add/remove programs open

control

for control panel

and your system file checker

sfc /scannow

note the space between the c and /

try those maybe the sfc /scannow will run

okay I did appwiz.cpl and nothing happened. it acted just like it does when I click on add remove programs from the C panel.

then when i did sfc /scannow it does the "Windows File Protection" takes about 20 min and then nothing seemed to happen after the scan. just closed.

any other ideas?

scannow now closed ...windows checker file sees all files are ok

now try this

devmgmt.msc

click on view tab
show hidden devices
look for gray triangle box
right click on +
do you see any AOE
if you do right click and remove

also can you download this
run it open it
see if AOE sows up
highlight it and remove it

have you tried to redownload it
reinstall it just for now
to see if things return to normal

okay I tried running windows cleanup utility and this is what I get.

have you tied to update windows since this major change
have you install new programs after you installed AOE
yes i know what AOE is....can you get to control panel

start..... run...... control ....click ok
folders options....view tab....restore defaults ......click ok

run cleanup .........to get rid of left overs

try using tune up
restart after each use of its features

and finally run a chkdsk /r

start/ run...../chkdsk /r click ok
if you can open ie or go to the links
see if this works

start/run/iexplore click ok

okay so I did the cleanup. ran that. then I went do download the tuneup 2007 link you sent me. I downloaded it tried to run it.. said the file was currupt. so I tried several other times and each time the same. so I went to the trial for the 2008. downloaded it and tried to install it and I get this error.

In looking at your hijackthis log, I believe you have malware present on your PC. Before you go any further here, please go to the Malware forum and post your hijackthis log there. I don't want you to continue with this other advice until you've been checked out there. If you are declared clean by a helper and still having issues, then you can return to this thread.
