start up trouble with laptop

My wife's Toshiba Sat Laptop has developed a very slow startup. I have checked the processes at start up and the CPU usage is at 100% I have removed all programs except the windows from startup and still have the problem? The one process called SVChost.exe is taken 98% What is this?

Hi Frank43, welcome to G2G.

Try turning off Automatic Updates, see if that makes a difference. You do this by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties. Then click on the Automatic Updates tab. Check "Turn off Automatic Updates". Shutdown and reboot, see what happens.

Post back with results please.

That's only step one. Now we should try to figure out why it was causing a problem.

There is nothing wrong with having it turned off as long as you do the updates manually once a month, sometime after the 2nd Tuesday release. I have it set to notify me when there are updates available but not download and install. I do that at my convenience, when it suits my needs.
