startup problems

occasionaly during startup my computer freezes right before i think its the bios screen?
it stays black with a cursor in the upper left

no, i think the problem was my hard drive, as a day later the bios couldnt read the hard drive.

ive heard it could cost $600 to get data back, is that true?

Try booting with a livecd before you jump to expensive conclusions.

i went into a computer store and they told me that was my only choice

but yesterday i turned it on and it was recognized, so i moved all my data off it and i can send it in now.
