Sorry for being a pain. Didn't expect a .net framework requirement for restore point. Expecially considering what we went through on other computer. Expected Erunt or other suggestion.

Want HJT log now or something else?

thanks

Hello barney466, sorry for the delay - as you can see the forums are bust and we try not to let anybody slip through the cracks, but it does happen. Let's get started:

1. Fix HJT entries

Please re-open Hijackthis (Vista users please right click and select Run as Administrator) and scan. Place a check mark in the box next to each of the following entries if present. Do not worry if they aren't there:

O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193423} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193429} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-615111193427} -
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1131-1111-1111-611111193428} -
O16 - DPF: {43331111-1111-1111-1111-611111195622} -
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {85D1F3B2-2A21-11D7-97B9-0010DC2A6243} (SecureLogin class) - http://secure2.comne...login-devel.cab

Now close all windows other than Hijackthis, including web broswers, so that HJT will have the best chance of being able to fix these problems, and click "Fix Checked" .

2. Uninstall Programs

Please go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel (Programs and Features if you are a Vista user). Select and remove the following:

Viewpoint Media Player, Viewpoint Manager, anything that says 'Viewpoint' - Viewpoint is an annoying media player that installs alongside many different things without your permission, not a good idea to keep it on your computer.

3. SmitfraudFix

It looks like you have/had a smitfraud infection. Let's see if there are any remains with this scan:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

*If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:\), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you.
http://www.beyondlog...processutil.htm

4. RSIT
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved directly to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Leave the file age at the default of 1 month, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Note: It is likely that the 2 logs will be very long and may not fit into one reply. If that's the case, please split them up into multiple replies and ensure that you've posted the contents of the logs to the last line, which should read ---EOF---.

I just need the log from SmitfraudFix and the 2 logs from RSIT in your next reply.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave,

I completely understand. The Holidays didn't help much either:) I for one was gone for a week. Again, please share my apologies for misunderstanding the policy on starting new topic to moderator. Having said that, attached are the logs you requested in the respective order.

Hello barney -

Logs looking good, couple quick things to fix:

1. OTMoveIt3

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WhenUSearch]

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{197b2588-e3c5-11db-a2d4-00e0184b1adb}]
    shell\AutoRun\command - F:\wd_windows_tools\setup.exe

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{4da413c6-0247-11db-a295-00e0184b1adb}]

    shell\Open\command - F:\resycled\boot.com f:

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{f7050a16-f7e2-11db-a2e2-00e0184b1adb}]
    shell\AutoRun\command - F:\LaunchU3.exe -a

    :Files
    C:\Program Files\WhenUSearch

    :Commands
    [Purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Start Explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, navigate to the open C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder. Open the newest .log file present in notepad and post its contents in your next reply.

After that just a final check and you should be good to go:

2. ATF Cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Note: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Note: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

3. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here.

Doubleclick mbam-setup.exe to install the program.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware at the end of setup, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
  • The scan will take a fairly long time to finish (you can leave it to run and go do something else), please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so and allow MBAM to finish.

4. Kaspersky Online Scan

Kaspersky online scanner uses Java technology to perform the scan. Because your Java is out of date, we need to update it first so that the scan will run without issues.

Update Java

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts. A log will appear (JavaRa.log), please post the contents of this log on the forum in your next reply.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Scan
  • Follow this link to the Kaspersky WebScanner
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
So post back with the logs from MBAM, Kaspersky, and OTMI and give me an update on how the PC is running, and we should have you on your way :).

Downloaded OTMoveIt3 and started process. Computer appears to be hung up. Something is going on but for the last hour it appears to have only executed 3 steps. I have hour glass on the screen. No light flicker indicating HD activity but I hear activity.

On the results side it shows

=======Processes===============
Process explorer.exe killed successfully
=======Registry================
Registry key HKEY_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\s
Registry key HKEY_Current_user\software\microsoft\w

Been sitting there for the last hour.

Don't know how long to wait but thought I would post update.

thanks

Hi fred -

Sometimes your protection programs can interfere with the running of our tools.

Delete your OTMoveIt program from its current location. Then disable all of your protection programs (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, all of it), if you don't know how to do that for some programs and need specific instructiosn gohere.

Then please download a new copy of OTMI3 from the link above and try the script again with everything still disabled.

Sorry about that confusion there Fred, that's my fault.. I made a mistake writing the script that is most likely what's causing the program to hang :). If you'll use this script instead you should have no problems:

:Processes
explorer.exe

:Reg

That definitely helped.

One message popped up on re-boot that I did not allow. Something wanted to INSTALL

_finish module install.bwm. As I said above, I did not allow. Below are what I believe to be the most recent logs you requested in the order you requested them above:

Hi fred -

Logs looking good. Just to quickly take care of a couple minor detections from Kaspersky:

1. OTMoveIt3

    :Files
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Backup pst from compaq400\backup.pst
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Bob Cox CD's\Cox CD's\Outlook\archive.pst
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive 2002.pst
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\fred_backup.pst
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\fred_mailbox.pst

    :Commands
    [Purity]

After that you're clean! Congratulations :).

We have a couple last things to take care of and then you're good to go.

Over the course of the fix you've used a variety of special tools to help with the cleaning process - none of these are of any use to you now that you're clean, and it's best not to have them hanging around on your computer. OTCleanIt is a small program that removes all the leftover tools and logs from cleanup of malware.

Please download OTCleanIt! to your desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTCleanIt.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button
  • A list of tool components used in the cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your firewall or other protection attempts to block OTCleanIt's attempts to reach the internet, please allow it to run.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove the tools we used, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process, choose Yes.
  • After the reboot all the tools we used should be gone.

Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your system restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for malware infection in the future; I strongly that you read them and take them to heart so that you don't have to endure the process of cleaning your computer again.

Proper use of antivirus and firewall
Antivirus and Firewall programs are integral to your computer security. However, just having them installed isn't enough. The definitions of these programs are frequently updated to detect the latest malware, and if you don't keep up with these updates then you'll be vulnerable to infection. Many antivirus and firewall programs have automatic update features, make use of those if you can. If your program doesn't, then get in the habit of routinely performing manual updates, because it's important.

You should keep your antivirus and firewall guard enabled at all times, don't shut them off unless there's a specific reason to do so. Also, regularly performing a full system scan with your antivirus program is a good idea to make sure nothing has slipped through your protection. Once a week works well for many people. You can set the scan to run during a time when you don't plan to use the computer and just leave it to complete on its own.

Finally, for a great tutorial on how to get the best protection out of your firewall, visit this link.

Safer web browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure tool for browsing the web. It has been known to be very susceptible to infection, and there are a couple good free alternatives: Firefox and Opera. Both are excellent faster, safer, more powerful and functional free alternatives to Internet Explorer. It's definitely worth the short period of adjustment to start using one of these. If you wish to continue using Internet Explorer, it would be a good idea to follow the tutorial here which will help you to make IE much safer.

Be careful
Having security programs installed is very helpful to you, but none of them have the gift of human thought. The best way to make sure you don't get infected is to exercise common sense. Be careful of what websites you visit - if a site looks suspicious, trust your instincts and get out of there. Be careful of what attachments you open in emails and files you download from websites - check them over carefully and look at the file extensions to make sure that you know what you're getting. Using peer-to-peer file sharing programs or downloading cracks and keygens is something else to avoid - the files you will be downloading are infected in a vast majority of cases, and the benefits simply aren't worth the risk to your computer.

A couple other useful utilities:
ATF Cleaner: Cleans unnecessary temporary files from your computer, run regularly to save disk space and keep your computer performing smoothly.
McAfee SiteAdvisor: A great firefox add-on that puts McAfee's database of tested sites at your fingertips so you can know whether or not that link you're about to click is safe.

Windows Updates
Along with keeping all of the programs above that you choose to use updated, it is also important to keep up on system updates from Microsoft, as these patch critical security vulnerabilities and keep you safe. You can update them at this site if they don't automatically install for you: http://www.windowsupdate.com. If you have automatic updates, you should always install them as soon as possible, that little bit of extra time is very well worth it instead of getting infected from an exploit and having to clean your PC again.

And finally, see TonyKlein's good advice (recently rewritten by our own admin Kat) which reinforces and extends on some of the above concepts:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

I'll leave this thread open for a couple days in case you come across any lingering problems that need fixing, then I'll close it up. If you need it reopened for any reason just shoot me a PM. It's been a pleasure working with you, now best of luck!

Cheers,
Dave

Dave,

I have noticed two things I don't know how to deal with.

1. Clock in toolbar is in 24hr mode.
2. WindowsXP tells me I have two updates to install. I have installed them several times. They are KB942830 and KB942831.

thanks

To fix the time, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel. Click on 'Classic View'. Doubleclick 'Regional and Language Options'. Then click on 'Customize this format'. Click on the 'Time' tab at the top, and copy-paste this into the Time format box:

h:mm:ss tt

Then click Apply and things should be back to normal.

As for the Windows Updates, I'm not sure what to tell you... are you sure they're the same updates each time? If it's still causing you issues, the Windows XP Forum would be the best place to post about that as I don't know what would be causing it. If you'd like, start a new topic over there, tell them you have a clean bill of health from the malware forum and link them to this topic so they can see what you've done here.

Best of luck,
Dave
