download the attached file, unzip and run

Under IE tab, make sure "Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser
control" is ALLOWED."

Is it?

If not, go into Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Security

Well, this will sound strange. Went out and made the changes you suggested, but then could not load the windows update page, due to active x being disabled. I know that sounds strange because everything was either enabled or prompt. So, I reset them back to medium, which is what I had them at before. Now when I go to Windows Update it no longer forces me to download the Genuine Advantage Tool.
.
I do not see any high priority updates at this time. I can see several other updates, which are browsable. It appears that this issue may heave been resolved. I appreciate your help. Thank You very much.

It seems pretty clear that windows genuine advantage was installed (since it was in add/remove)

Changing things and setting them back to defaults seems to have inclogged the issue, so I would just be happy and move on.

Unfortunately, even though it is the second Tuesday of the month (MS's regular critical update update day), there are not any today

see if you can download the above uphclean tool

if it does, I'd say we got lucky and cross our fingers

I had the same, or a similar problem. I could not download the validation tool to a genuine windows PC. Today, I spent 45 minutes of my life with Microsloth support and got nowhere. :)

At the end of that time, after trying many options, downloading and applying patches sent by MS, I still couldn't download the WGA. They suggested I uninstall my antivirus in the hope that would work. I was reluctant to do that because it was a paid download without re-download rights.

I applied gerryf's file and instructions. Worked straight away. :tazz:

Many, many thanks Gerry. If you ever feel tempted to apply to MS for a job, I would be happy to provide a refererence. :)
