computer to computer using usb only

I have an usb cable that the package says you can transfer info between computers via this cable. I have a laptop and destop. Hooking the cable up to both brings up no "new hardware found" message or anything. How do I activate it. I have lots of info on the laptop that has no burner or floppy. I need to transfer it to the desktop. Any help on this would be appreciated.
