Norton 2006 found download.dialer but won't delete it. I used HiJack This and created a log file for you to view. I also found that explorer.cab was infected. I assume this is where the dialer is infecting. I manually quarantined this file with Norton and ran Norton again and download.dialer doesn't show up anymore. Will this cause me a problem in the future if I don't have the explorer.cab file in my system?

* Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall Registry Cleaner if it is there.

* Run Kaspersky online virus scan here.

When given the option, choose the "Extended database" for the scan.

When the scan is finished, Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from Kaspersky scan

There is no registry cleaner in my add/remove programs. I used to have it awhile back but deleted it. I did find when using Registry editer under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/REGISTRY CLEANER. I also did the Kaspersky online scan and another HiJack This Log for you. Here they are, and thanks for the help.

I am attqaching a fix.zip file to this post. It contains a fix.reg file to remove the Registry cleaner entry from the registry. Download it and unzip it to extract the fix.reg file.

Doubleclick the fix.reg file to add it to the registry. Answer Yes to confirm the merge.

You should be good to go now.


* Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.


* Go to Windows update and install all "High Priority Updates".


* Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

I just noticed that your antivirus is not loading at startup. You are running without active protection. You need to enable all protections in Norton ASAP!.

Thank you very much. I'm still wondering about the explorer.cab file that I quarantined. Since I quarantined it, Norton doesn't pick up the download.dialer anymore. Do you think this is where the dialer was infecting and if so, will I have any problems in the future with this being quarantined?

The explorer.cab file was the dialer file. It was not a Windows file so there will be no problems as a result of it being quarantined.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"
