Hi all,

I am using my work laptop to write this as I seem to have run into significant issues with my desktop. I was on the internet when i noticed my iexplorer freeze a little, an AVG virus alert popped up (Win32 something....) so i indicated "delete file" and shut down iexplorer.

Windows then began to shut down unprompted by me. I did a hard shut down and booted in safe mode. I ran AVG scanner - nothing... i ran lavasoft adaware6 - deleted some files - i think one was wininet.dll unfortunately.... I also ran Ewido and it too found nothing wrong in safe mode ... at this time only my internet access was disabled.

when i rebooted into normal mode i noticed that my windows started without showing any desktop icons or start menu, only an Application Error popped up saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022). Click OK to terminate the application."

I can use Ctrl+Alt+Del to manage my tasks. So I scanned the whole system once again with AVG and Ewido and it showed me no infections. I tried to use my WinExplorer and AdAware SE but they don't work neither, due to the same problem (Windows shows the same Application Error message). It does tell me that wininet.dll is missing though... what do i do to replace the dll on my desktop when i cannot access the internet to download the proper file??

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you use safemode or do you get the same error?

Can you download and burn to a cd (or flash drive) from the computer you are using with internet and then transfer them to the computer?

I think i have resolved the issue, turns out my wininet.dll was infected by "alpha Sweeper" who would graciously fix the mess they created by selling me a 40$ program.

I ended up copying a new version of wininet.dl off of my windows XP CD using Cprompt into the Windows/System32 folder - everything *seems* to be fine now... If it crops back up I'll re-post.

I didn't mean to sound so grim. Lets see what we find

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Hijack fixes

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell321.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\intell321.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.line6.net I'm not sure what this is. If you trust it then just leave it

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked


Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with a new Hijack log in your next reply.
