Hi all,
My comp has started running soooo slow. I have ran all of the spyware, ewido etc. and I am still running slow. At the same time, the backround of the decriptions of icons on desktop, has become color. I have tried to change this with no avail. Here is my highjack log. Thanks for the help.

Hello :) I will be helping you with your log.

Your HijackThis log is clean. :tazz: You are running a Rogue anti-spyware application that should be uninstalled by going to Start>Control Panel>Add and Remove programs. Please see HERE for more information about SpywareKiller

The vulnerability reports you are getting are due to the computer not being fully patched. Please open Internet Explorer, then click on Tools at the top, then choose "Windows Update". Allow it to search for all updates, and install all of the critical ones at a minimum. It's a good idea to do this regularly. :)

Once you have uninstalled SpywareKiller and patched your Windows, please make sure you reboot the computer. Then let me know how things are running. :)

Hi Kat,
Thanks for your explaination of how posts are read. It makes a whole lot of sense now. I apologize to
all. I have done a lot this past week and would just like to ask a couple of questions. I have the Ad-Aware SE. I have spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster, spyware guard, Clean-Up, Nortons, IE-SPYAD. Is this all that I need.

Concerning Nortons. It is a six month trial, downloaded with a google pack. Is this the virus protector that you would recommend?

I read that windows firewall is not that good. Should I download Zone Alarm, Sygate or something else? If so should I disable the windows firewall and where?

Of the programs above, should they all be ran in safe mode, and how often should each be run to help keep my comp clean?

So sorry if these are simple questions. Thanks to all of you talented people, that help all of us newbies. :tazz:

Again thanks Kat for your kind reply concerning how posts are read. I did browse your site. I thought it was really cute. I envy the photo of Dale's car :)

Hello again! I am a bit rushed this morning. My bday was the other day, and my mother just informed me that I have to bring the girls over later for a bday cake and stuff. :tazz: :) I had planned to work here all day! :) Anyway, I will get back to you later this afternoon with answers to your questions. I don't want to rush a reply. :)

Hello again. :)

For virus protection, I recommend the free AVG by Grisoft over paid products any day. You can get the free version (fully functional) for home users HERE

For firewalls, I don't recommend the XP one. :tazz: It blocks incoming traffic, but not outgoing. Say you get a dialer or some type of malware that sends out your information. The XP firewall won't block it. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls
I personally use Zone Alarm free version for home users. :)

To turn off your windows firewall, go to Start>Control Panel, and click on Windows Firewall. Click the "Off" button (circle), then click "Ok".

For a great article on programs to help keep your computer secure, please read So how did I get infected in the first place?

Hi Kat, Thanks for your help. I am sorry for not getting back to you sooner. When I try to get to Geeks To Go, internet explorer says that it has encountered a problem and must abort. I finally realized that if I hit ok and then hit the back button, it takes me back to you guys, really weird.

Ok, I have uninstalled Nortons, and installed AVG. I have installed Zone Alarm also. I am trying to go by everything, in How did I get infected in the first place section. I am wondering about windows anti virus #6 is it supposed to be turned on with the anti virus AVG or just the AVG only?

Thanks again Kat

Hi Kat, wow zone alarm stumped me for a while, until I finally turned off the pop ups. I think I have it set right :whistling: . I still can't seem to fix my desktop. The boxes behind the dialog is in color and I don't know how to change that. I can make them different colors but I can't make the dialog boxes invisible color. I know it is probably something really simple. I share the comp with another user and their dialogs boxes are invisible.

Can you let me know how often I should run spyware etc and if I should run them in safe mode or not. I think I have everything else set right :help: . Thanks,

Here is the standard closing speech I give everyone in the malware forums. It outlines what you should be using to protect your computer. I personally run a full anti virus scan every night while I'm sleeping, and I run my Ewido and SpySweeper scans once a week (More often if I feel I may have gotten something on here that shouldn't...which nearly never happns).

Congratulations! Your log is now clean! :whistling:

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online and stand-alone Anti-Virus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE
How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware
Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:
  • SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other Necessary Programs:
  • A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows Security and Critical Updates
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Internet Explorer Security and Critical Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
