sli 512 pci-e card + a 256 pci-e card

the 256 is 1200 hmz, but the 512 is 1700mhz

can they still work together in sli

No. You have to get the exact model and card to put them in SLi.

Like mine for example:

I got a BFG GeForce 7800 GT OC, I couldn't get a 7900 or a 7800 GT, 7800 GTX. I could only get a 7800 GT OC.

Also, SLi is a bit overrated in my opinion in the moment, just get one really good card. Like instead of putting my 7800 GT OC in SLi I would rather get a 7900 GTX or a X1900.
