Help! My computer has suddenly encountered a whole plethora of problems over the past week or so, all hitting at once. I found and removed at least one virus using Norton, and found several infestations of both AdDestroyer and Virtual Bouncer lurking in the computer. Things seem to be improved, except for one thing..

SVCHOST.EXE is hogging the CPU time on the computer. It doesn't start immediately.. when I boot up the computer, it's taking 0-3% of CPU. But over the course of about an hour, especially it seems if I'm connected to the internet, it slowly grows to about 40-50%, making certain programs impossible to run with acceptable framerates.

I kept the internet on all night as a test, and when I woke up SVCHOST.EXE was taking up 85-90% of the CPU! This cripples the computer.

I am told that SVCHOST.EXE is a legitimate system program, but it should not be taking up so much CPU time. There are generally several versions of SVCHOST.EXE running at once, which I am also told is normal. The CPU hog identifies itself as LOCAL SERVICE. Here's a sample of my Task Manager:

...
SVCHOST.EXE ... SYSTEM .................... 00 ... 1,604 K
SVCHOST.EXE ... SYSTEM .................... 03 ... 11,076 K
SVCHOST.EXE ... NETWORK SERVICE ... 00 ... 1,272 K
SVCHOST.EXE ... LOCAL SERVICE ........ 18 ... 1,308 K
SVCHOST.EXE ... SYSTEM .................... 00 ... 1,292 K
...

I've only been on the net for about half an hour, and already SVCHOST.EXE Local Service has grown to 18% or so of CPU!

Please help, this has been the most consistent, long-term and durable problem I've been encountering lately and I have no clue what to do about it!!

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results. <_<

Please Download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm and Run the Program. Disconnect from the Internet and close all Internet Explorer Windows. Check the "I know what I'm doing" Button and remove all traces of [file]. Reboot.

Then, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

By "remove all traces of [file]", do you mean put all the files that appear in LSP-Fix (there are four) into the "Remove" box and click "Finish>>"?

I'll D/C from the net before I do this, but I want to make sure that that's what I need to do.

Ok. I did everything you said, but now I have a new problem.

I can't access any web pages! It took me three tries to get onto AOL (only the third-place number worked.. this has happened before since I got the firewall installed so I didn't think it a problem yet), and once I did, I couldn't access any web sites, including Google and this one. I'm typing this from a secondary computer now.

I tried rebooting, but still only the third number works, and I can't access web sites. The AOL news ticker still seems to work, as well as my mail. I definitely seem to connect to the internet, my browser just won't access any sites. There's no lag either.. I type in the name of the site, and I get the failure screen instantly, there's no attempt at loading.

What could be causing this?

Oh, and I tried both AOL and Internet Explorer, both no dice when it comes to accessing web sites.

AHHH!
MY COMPUTER IS BROKEN!

I followed the advise you had previously posted (restore the F2 file), and tried accessing web sites. Didn't work. So I went back to the backup section on HijackThis and noticed the F2 file was still listed there. Thinking I might not have restored it at all I restored it again. And then again one or two more times. Then I ran HijackThis' scanner and saw the the F2 file did show up, and that by restoring it I was copy/pasting rather than cut/pasting. But the internet still didn't work properly.

So I decided to reboot and see if that helped. But there's a problem. My computer won't boot properly!! It gets to the log-in menu (I am one of a family of four that uses the computer), but when I select my log-in identity, it spends 5 minutes loading, and just gives me a blank desktop. No icons, no start menu, no taskbar. I ctrl-alt-deleted and my task manager came up.. Explorer never initialized!! I also got the following error message before I was able to bring up the task manager:

"tsircusr.exe - Application error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application."

So I did. But I couldn't do anything after that!! I can't access ANY programs now, only the task manager. What do I do?

Oh, and I've tried rebooting 3-4 times, hoping to get lucky, using a different user name each time hoping that only one of the user names was corrupted. Doesn't work! I get the same result every time.

Please calm down, we can fix it. Reboot in safe mode by tapping the F8 button. Open up hijackthis. Go to config. Choose the backups tab. Click the following and choose restore:

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\TSI32\tsircusr.exe

Restart in regular mode and see if that helps. It should fix it.

I ran Windows in Safe Mode, and got a black screen with "Safe Mode" written in white in every corner. Nothing else happened.

I was able to access the task manager, just like in Unsafe Mode, and discovered that I can run programs from the task manager. So, I ran hijackthis, and restored the F2 file for the 4th or 5th time. It still won't boot properly - tsircusr.exe DOES show up in the task manager as a thread, but Explorer doesn't, which is probably why I'm not getting icons, start menu, or taskbar.

How do I get Explorer working properly again? I can at least run programs if I remember their name!

Oh, and I've rebooted several times in both Safe and Normal mode, and "restored" tsircusr.exe twice, but Explorer still isn't activating.
