first noticed my start page was taken hostage.. ran ad-aware6 and it found nothing. changed start page over and over to no avail. about.blank is the only page that will stay put. (after days of messing with this thing) i tried to run trend micro housecall like i normally do, but it will not load. tried to install the mcafee, it will not load, finally got the trial version of trend micro to install, but it finds nothing. when i tried to load mcafee i got an error message saying activex not enabled. checked the settings and it is still enabled. after reading many posts, i went to the windows update page, and it gave me an error as well saying it could not read my computer. so there is something going on here, and i can't find it! i installed hijack this, and "fixed" the strings that went to the bogus start page, but they kept coming back until i quit making my start page msn.com. even my popup blocker refuses to work as it always did... about to throw my computer out the window! i am sure i am missing something, can you please direct me to what it might be? <_<

Welcome foundub4 <_<

Reboot in Safe Mode (by tapping F8 at startup and selecting Safe Mode from the menu).

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

C:\WINDOWS\ptnvlthq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Wast.exe

I would recommend uninstalling SpyKiller and using Ad-Aware and/or Spybot Search & Destroy instead (SpyKiller yields a ton of false positives and also charges if you actually want to remove something).

Delete the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\ptnvlthq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Wast.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mshta.exe
C:\WINDOWS\winh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ptnvlthq.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log.

system wouldn't boot in safe mode. after 15 min i gave up, so did everything else you said (minus that part).
kept one of the 016 eportal.paccar because i need that for work.
tried changing my home page back to msn but now my history kill monitor keeps popping up asking me if i want to change my start page to the same bogus address as before. ugh!
012 is a new line, have any idea what that might be?
016 (the 5th and the 12th, loader.exe) - don't know what those are either..

I missed this one:
O16 - DPF: {AD7FAFB0-16D6-40C3-AF27-585D6E6453FD} - http://dload.ipbill.com/del/loader.cab
It's an installer for a common dialer program (attempts to dial an oversees number and have it charged to your phone bill).

It's safe to fix any 016 entries that are unknown to you. If needed, you'll simply be prompted to reinstall the next time you visit a site requiring that plug-in.

The 012 entry is for Adobe Acrobat.

I'd recommend you run Ad-aware again, being sure to get the latest update.

Are you able to access Windows Update yet? How about the rest of your troubles.

still can't get ms updates. it says "Windows Update Error
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page" my historykill does a popup every 10 seconds with this start page, the only one that "it" doesn't try to change is about:blank. if adaware isn't finding anything, and virus checker isn't finding anything... than how do i still have something i don't understand this update problem, i am guessing whatever is causing the updates page to not load correctly is the same reason i can't download the mcafee, and play spades online (not really important, but i should be able to if i want, right??)
have any more ideas/suggestions for me... THANKS!

Run Ad-aware again. Look for items that it can't repair, take note of them and reply.
