Cleaned computer of malware this past week with help in another forum.
Now need to update WinXP SP1. Went to Microsoft Update and chose Express install.
Received message "Updates unable to successfully install".
The following unsuccessful updates were reported:
Updates for Background Intelligent Transfer Service 2.0
WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1
Updates for Windows XP (KB898461)
Windows Genine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

Site recommended to "check update history", which shows the last update was March 21, 2005.

I have tried this several times and receive the same message.
Searched the forum for "WinXP update fails" and did not find anything related to this situation.

Any ideas?
Regards,
Tim

Hello Keith,
That update was successful. Shall I look in Microsoft.com for individual updates for the othe components which did not install?

Keith,
That link helped to set the connection to Microsoft validation servers correctly.
These updates still fail:
Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

I have ZoneAlarm Pro Firewall turned on, and SpySweeper active.
Can either of these be a problem. I dont want to turn off the firewall because I finally have a clean system after several days of help from the Malware removal forum.

Keith,
I also notice that each time I start Internet Explorer, it goes to find the "Proxy Settings" before connecting to my home page. Can this be a problem? What is a proxy server?

Note The Automatic Updates feature is not affected by the WGA validation check. Therefore, you can use the Automatic Updates feature to make sure that you receive critical Windows updates.

See if automatic updates works

I will try to get hold of the validation tool

Keith,
I downloaded that file, and executed it several times. I see no activity on screen due to that file, I do see hard drive activity for a few seconds.

Also, I enabled Automatic Update using control panel, and set the time for "every day, 11:00PM" and rebooted machine to make it effective. I watched the machine as time passed over 11:00 pm and nothing happened.

Click start then run, type services.msc then press enter, are Background intelligent transfer and automatic updates set to automatic start up type and started. If you change anything here, reboot

Keith,
Auto Update was in "start automatically at startup" and started.
BITS was in "manual" and stopped. I set to "start auto...." and started.
Then rebooted.
Still no automatic update. I'm looking for the little pop up in lower right corner of screen that will show "updates are ready...." or some such message. Is this what I would see? Or will update be transparent to me?

Keith,
It's late here. If you have some recommendations, I will try them tomorrow evening.
