Mp3 Problem - Lost Space

I recently bought an Mp3 player which was supposed to be 4 Gigs. When I connected to my PC, it showed as 4 Gigs. I tried to transfer some files into the Mp3 player it worked with a small amount of files, but when I put in a couple of hundred Mp3's it had problems. So I formatted the player, and all of a sudden it is only showing 109 Mb available capacity. I've checked everywhere and everything is showing that this is now a 109 Mb player. Does anyone have any idea's of where the other 3.9 Gigs went?
