I have a Linksys USB to Ethernet adapter (USB100TX) that I belive might be dead, I would like some expert opinions.

Initialy I pluged it into a Win 98 SE computer as per instructions in manual. It did not identify the device corectly, instead it showed as ____m____ and later unknown USB device. So I pluged it into a Win XP Pro SP2 computer, and it comes up as Unknown USB device, Error code 10 "could not start", So I try it in a third machine XP Home SP2, and same.

Next i open the device to check for visual signs of bad solder joints or visible damage. None present, but in a last ditch effort I plug it in while opened. And whola, it recognizes not as a linksys but as ADMTek AN986 (the chipset), So I download and install drivers for the chipset. And still the link light is not on, so it is not linked to the network, however from my router I can see the mac address FF FF FF FF blah... and it assigned ip 192.168.0.101 which is in the range of my LAN, indeed winipcfg shows the device has indeed queryed DHCP and obtained an IP address. However I cannot ping the router, and from my XP machine I cannot ping the 98. So ping fails, 100% loss.

Do you think the device is just dead or something else might be hapening?
