hmm....shouldn't have to...but give it a try....if y ou can't activate over the internet...call the number they give you and tell them you had to do a format reinstall...they will give you an activation code

?.....it won't let you log in...but you know it needs to be activated? did it ask you about activation first? or did it say that your activation period has expired and that you have to activate before you can login?

is there a COA on your computer (certificate of authenticity)
and
where did you get the version of xp that you're using? is it retail oem or upgrade?

it says a problem has prevented window form accuratley checking the status of the licence for this computer. To prcoeed your copy of windows must be activated with microsoft

......still wondering why it's on a file...i assume if you bought it you threw away the original box and what not correct?

can you get into safe mode at all?
what kind of file is it in
