Seems my computer is infected with a Win32 Trojan. IE would lock up whenever I tried to use one of two Favorites. I ran Ad-aware and it locked while searching the IE Favorites. So I ran Ad-aware in safe mode, which worked - found 3 Win32 Trojan items. Then I ran an Ewido full scan, also in safe mode. Then I deleted the two offending IE Favorites folders and ran Clean-up, while still in safe mode. Seem to be gone, but then it came back. Every time I go into IE, after a while I get a message that says IE needs to shutdown. I'm using Mozilla for now and have not had any problems.

I've run through this same procedure several times and it keeps coming back. Here's my most recent HijackThis log. Hope you can help! :tazz:

I was not able to run ActiveScan because Explorer keeps shutting down and it won't work with Mozilla. What should I do now? :whistling:

Try this one:

Run Kaspersky online virus scan here.

After the updates have downloaded, click on the "Scan Settings" button.
Choose the "Extended database" for the scan.
Under "Please select a target to scan", click "My Computer".
When the scan is finished, Save the results from the scan!

This one didn't work either. I get a Windows popup that says Unknown Publisher. Not sure what to do next. :whistling:

I don't see an antivirus installed. Go to the link below and download and install the free version of AVG. Update the virus definitions then boot to safe mode and run a full system scan. Let it fix/remove anything it finds. Post back here the results of the scan.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Also open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here.

Everything seems fine now, but I'm not sure how to be sure. I ran both Ewindo and Ad-aware in safe mode, but everytime I booted back in normally, stuff would start happening again (IE locking up and shutting down). Then I would go back to safe mode and run them again, and it would find the same viruses. So, I ran SmitRun, which I got from this site the last time we were invaded (Thanks!) and that seemed to work. Ewido and Ad-aware don't fine anything anymore and I'm not having any problems anymore with IE.

I followed your instructions, but I'm not posting a scan from AVG because it didn't find anything. I did post below the Uninstall Manager and a new Highjack This log.

The only other thing that is happening on my computer that was not there before is a Windows Security Center alert. A red shield is showing on the tab at the bottom. When I click on it a Windows Security Center window opens. It says Firewall On; Automatic Updates Off; and Virus Protection On. Is this legitimate or should I be concerned?

By the way, we did have an antivirus program (MS Beta), but apparently it expired at the end of 2005. So, looks like we've been without one since then and, I assume, that's why we got this virsus. I think I will go and get the most recent Beta from Microsoft. What is your recommendation for antivirus software, free or otherwise?

Your help is really appreciate!

Yes, that Windows Secuity Center alert is legit.

MS-Antispyware is not an antivirus. It is an antispyware. My recommendation for an antivirus is Nod32:

http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm

If you do buy it or any other antivirus, you need to remove AVG before you install it. Never run two antiviruses on a computer at the same time.

* Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall these:

Microsoft AntiSpyware <---> remove it since it is expired anyway.
Security Toolbar

* Now go here and install the latest version of Java.

* Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.

* Go to Windows update and install all "High Priority Updates".

* Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Looks like I spoke too soon. When I booted up my computer this morning, I decided to run Ad-Aware again and it found 6 critical items - all of them were tracking cookies. I've included that scan log here. Then I went into safe mode and ran Ewido and AVG. AVG found nothing, but Ewido found one item - I've included the Ewido log below. Also included an new Hickjack this log.

Why does this keep coming back? Your help is appreciated!

Although we don't want to get tracking cookies, as far as threats go, they are not that high on the chart. We all get them from time to time
Read what a tracking cookie is here and how to block many of them:

http://www.mvps.org/...002/cookies.htm

If you have Spybot installed, you can use it's imminize feature to block a lot of them too.

I do understand your concern, but don't get yourself too worked up over them.
