I dont think you can change the desktop icon but you can change icon like Media Player and Other programs
i think you can change the My documents icon

to change the icons go to the desktop right click on the wallpaper and click properties tehn go to your theme and click the advanced button this should open a new window and allow you to change some of the icons on the desktop. you can also right click on the icons and click properties and click the change icon button and search for your icons that way

as for Registry tweaks dont know any

I worked it out. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons, the string called 15 (you have to creat it) controls the Icon that I wanted to change. Other numbers control other icons.
Here is a list just for any one interested I found it on Google Groups.

Value Description
Unknown File Type
Default Document
Default Application
Folder
Open Folder
5.25 inch Floppy
3.5 inch Floppy
Removable Drive
Hard Drive
Network Drive
Network Disconnected
Cd-rom Drive
Ram Drive
Globe
Network Pipes ?
Desktop
Print Manager
Network Neighborhood
Workgroup
Program
Document Folder
Settings
Find
Hint
Command
Screen Saver
Docking
Display
Sharing Overlay (Hand)
Shortcut Overlay (Small Arrow)
Default Printer Overlay (Small Tick)
Recycled Empty
Recycled Full
Dial-up Networking
Desktop
Control Panel
Program Groups
Printers
Font
Start Menu settings
Audio Cd
Log Off

You edit the value of the string to the path to the icon.
