I have a laptop that was given to me that I have been trying to clean up. I installed AVG to clean out the infected files. (16) and have run the defrag several times with no problems. But when I attempt to do a Disk Cleanup the system gets bogged down when trying to compress the old files. I've let the Disk Cleanup run for several hours without any progress. Any ideas of what I should do?

Click start then control panel, network and internet, internet options, on the general tab, click delete cookies, click delete files and tick to include offline content

Click start then run, type %TEMP% then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file, click delete, confirm, they won't all delete but you should be able to manually remove any which do not start with ~

Boot the PC to safe mode, (keep tapping F8 until you get options, choose safe mode), run disc clean up

I have already tried the first and third parts but did them again along with the second part of your instuctions. I'm in safe mode now, for about 30 minutes, running disk cleaning and nothing is happening?

Download, install and run Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

I was at 65% complete when I got a message that a certain file was unable to be downloaded.

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter, you need the XP CD and Windows File Protection will show a blue onscreen progress bar, when the bar goes, reboot

Click start then run, type chkdsk /f /r then press enter, type Y to confirm for next boot, press enter then reboot.

Windows will appear to load normally then either the monitor will show progress or the screen will go blank, do not disturb this. This will take an hour or so before it gets to the desktop.
