Whats photobucket got to do with it, just go into control panel and upload your picture in the avatar, section just make sure you have a proper sized picture in jpeg format.

I noticed if you put a pic in your profile it's actually be better quality if you use gif format rather than jpg.. doesn't make much sense to me but I tried both formats and it definitely looked better as gif.

I don't know if they same applies to avatars.
