hey guys, This christmas I got a good deal on a HP Pavilion because it was refurbished. It is a Pavilion a720n. Anyway this week it started acting up. When ever I try to boot up, it will get to the Windows XP loading screen, and then it will automaticly restart. I can't get into windows, or safemode.

I was having an error message also that said some file was corrupt, but it wont give me that message anymore. What I noticed was when I would get the error message, in black and white, the cursor, the little line that blinks that looks like this --> _ <--- would jump all around the monitor screen. So that makes me think its hardware? Anyone ever seen this happen? IDE cables? Harddrive?

The computer did not come with recovery CD's, but it did come with an option in windows to burn the Recovery CD's to 9 CD's or to 2 DVDS. I tried the DVD method, but it said the DVD's were not blank (which they were). Anyway now HP wants me to pay 20 bucks for these recovery CD's. My question is, do you guys think it's a software problem or hardware problem.

I dont want to buy CD's that that wont fix my problem.

P.S. The computer has a second harddrive I believe with the recovery information on it. At the first load up screen that says HP, I have an option to do a system recovery if I press F10, but I get another error message that says
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

If this is the first time you've seen this....ext"

At the bottom of the screen it syas

Technical information

***STOP : 0X0000004E (0X0000008F, 0X00018969, 0X0001FE69, 0X00000000)

And of course the jumping cursor line is also jumping around the screen on this error message also.

Hi greggumz...

This could be hardware...could be memory. If you have more than 1 stick of RAM in the machine, try removing one and see if it will boot to Windows. Try different configurations of the RAM...ie: switch sticks, try different slots, etc...

Does the machine have a PCI/AGP video card, or is it using onboard video?
