Hi Sue1661

You have a nasty About:Blank infection. This fix requires several tools that need to be downloaded. Please download these now, we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update.

Enable hidden files and folders: http://www.bleepingc...torial=62#winme

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Clean Up the left overs

Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

Hi Sue1661

Well done :tazz: Now some final cleanup.

Download Deldomains.inf from here http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf and save it so you can find it easily.

Open HijackThis again and do a System Scan Only then check these entries. Close all open windows and click on Fix Checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Open Windows Explorer and find the deldomains.inf file. Right-click and select > Install
This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also. You may need to replace any entries that you had in trusted zones already.

I recommend you remove Viewpoint Mediaplayer. You may not even have been aware that it was loaded on your computer. It was proably installed with an AIM update or Adobe Reader 6.0 Atmosphere update and you wouldn't have been advised. It does sometimes download updates so it has some security holes. Viewpoint plays the ads in the AIM ad window. If you were aware it was installed and choose to use it then don't remove it.

To remove Viewpoint - Open Control Panel Add/Remove Programs

Find Viewpoint listed and remove.

Then delete these files and folders

C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm - delete file only
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igfxsrvc.dll - delete file only
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint - Remove entire folder - if you uninstalled Viewpoint

Reboot and update your antivirus software and run a full scan. Post a new HijackThis log for a final check and I'll post some prevention advice.

Hi Sue 1661

Looks like you are now in the clear. Please set a new restore point. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Click on Create a Restore Point. Give it a name you'll remember. The time and date will be automatically added. Close system Restore.

For some additional protection in the future:

Keep Windows and Internet Explorer fully up to date - use automatic updates if possible. You need to investigate installing SP2 on your Windows installation for greater security.

Install a firewall. The Windows one only controls incoming traffic - it doesn't control outgoing traffic.

These are free - Zone Alarm is the most widely used but the others all work as well:
Zone Alarm http://www.Zonelabs.com/
Sygate http://soho.sygate.c...ownload_buy.htm
Tiny Personal Firewall http://www.webmasterfree.com/tpfw.html
Kerio Personal Firewall http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

Give some consideration to using Firefox or Mozilla as your browser. http://www.mozilla.org They are free and more secure than internet explorer. Firefox is easy to use and doesn't take long to get used to. Thunderbird, the sister email program to Firefox, is also easy to use and set up and a whole lot more secure than OE.

Don't click on OK or yes on any advert on a webpage or in spam email. Before downloading any free software - check that it doesn't use spyware as 'marketing' or to keep it free. Google is your friend or ask somewhere like here :tazz:

Keep your antivirus program up to date and do regular scans
Keep your firewall up to date and read alerts before clicking Yes.

Keep Adaware up to date and do regular scans
Keep Spybot Search and Destroy up to date and do regular scans

These are free and will help to keep most spyware off your PC:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
SpywareGuard http://www.javacools...sgdownload.html - gives real time monitoring of common spyware changes.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. The download is quite a long way down the page - but the page is worth reading for more information about spyware.
https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

Stay Safe Online
http://www.staysafeonline.info

If you want to keep using Internet Explorer this is worth reading for setting up secure settings. Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security Settings
http://www.microsoft...si...ttings.asp

Spyware moves very fast and adapts to prevention methods very quickly so keep all prevention up to date.
