I had to reformat my hard drive due to a virus infection. After I reinstalled Windows XP I tried to reload my MS Office 2000 using my CD. The installation went great but when I clicked on Word the installation starts all over again asking from the Product Key. I enter it and it is rejected. I know the key code is correct. I can access Excel but not Windows. When I click on help in Word I see that there is no product ID number like there is in Excel. For some reason the registration won't stay on Wordl
Is there anywhere in the Registry that I can enter the product key manually?
If not, can anyone suggest how I can get the product key to work. I really don't want to buy a new Word if I don't have to.

You could always try uninstalling Office and then reinstalling. If you have the same problem then it might be best to format the disk again, reinstall the operating system then reinstall Office and see how it goes.

Btw, you mentioned virus problems so don't forget to install an anti-virus program and update regularly. Check all computer media (floppies etc) as well. Also, don't click on the X to close those pesky pop-ups as some of them aren't as innocent as they may appear. The Google toolbar stops most of the pop-ups on my computer ... the ones that do sneak through generally respond nicely to ALT F4

Good luck.

Thanks for your advice. I uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times. I found the answer in Microsoft knowledge garden. I had installed Office over MS Works. MS Works Word was dominant over Office Word so I uninstalled MS Works and MS Works Word. My Office 2000 Word now works perfectly.

Pleased to read the problem is now sorted. You hadn't mentioned that MS Works was already installed!

The outcome appears to be different if Office/Word is already installed. Only last week I installed MS Works Suite 2001 to help a friend with a task but MS Office 2000 was already installed ... Works didn't take over the existing Word and there appeared to be two versions of Word on my computer after the install. (The rulers looked different for one thing.) To my surprise Works didn't ask me to enter the product key code - this was original software - perhaps it would have done if no other MS stuff was installed? I was still able to access and use the original Word from the desktop shortcut but accessing Word through Works Suite brought up the Works Word. Anyway, the job has been sorted and Works has now been uninstalled.

Ah, the joys of computing :tazz:
