Error message for media player 10

Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled.
Do you want to install the player from the microsoft web site? yes - no

I click yes - to go to microsoft web site and download the media player.
After the download, I run the install program and I get this error message.

It was not possible to complete setup.
Window Media Player was not installed.

To update Windows, run media player update again.

I get the same results, over and over.

What do I need to do to fix this problem so I can install & use my media player?

By the way, Norton anti-virus & firewall was in the disable mode before downloading and installing the software.
