RAM trouble

I have just installed my new ram stick. when i installed it i took out my old ram stick and put my new one in the 1st slot, then put my old one in the second. when i started up my computer it said i only have 240, when i have a 256 stick installed and a 128 stick(128 being the old one). i switched the sticks around, then my computer said i only had 120 ram. whats wrong?
