missing cd drive-need help with microsoft article

ive found an article http://support.micro...b/314060/EN-US/
which refers to the problem im having with a non functioning cd drive (error code 39)
in this article it refers to deleting the upper and lower filters in a specific registry location.
the only thing is...ive never heard of filters in the registry.
could someone explain to me what they r, r the the reg strings? r how can i differenciate them in the registry.
