Please help! I've spent two days trying to solve this problem and don't seem to be getting anywhere. Everytime I open Internet Explorer it opens to a page with "about:blank" in the address line. Changing back to my original homepage does no good.

Worse, most of the functions on the "Start" menu don't work (e.g. I can't open windows explorer, use "search," etc.).

I also occasionally get the Dr.Watson Postmorten debugger message.

I have followed all the instructions on your "Start here" page. HJT log is as follows:

You have a nasty About:Blank infection. This fix requires several tools that need to be downloaded. Please download these now, we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-ware - Download, install, and update.

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Clean Up the left overs

Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

Did everything (twice), still didn't fix the problem. Still getting about:blank when I start IE, and I still can't use start menu items (such as search or explore)

Most of the items you listed to fix in HJT were not present (three or four were, and I deleted those). There were several "sp.html#44768" files, though, that were not in the folders you listed to mark to fix. Could these files be causing problems?

yes they can, and will. Like I said before you got a nasty About:Blank infection.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-ware - Download, install, and update.

Enable hidden files and folders: http://www.bleepingc...torial=62#winme

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Clean Up the left overs

Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

Still no good. I have a number of shortcuts that keep appearing under my favorites--mostly for sex sites. Can't get rid of them no matter what. Is there any way to kill this thing?

I htink the O23 is the problem, please do the following.

click on start -> run

in the box that appears type this line
sc delete 6QÔõ'ª´ÆÐ8 <--you will have to copy and paste that file name

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-ware - Download, install, and update.

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Clean Up the left overs

Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

I think we made some progress that time. I'm not being inundated by messages indicating that I'm under attack, and (so far) IE has not opened to the about:blank page. However, my computer is still not clean. In particular the line

O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 6QÔõ'ª´ÆÐ8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\msjk.exe (file missing)

is back. Activescan picked up and disinfected a number of problems, but several others could not be disinfected. Most of the persistent bookmarks of unknown origin in my favorites are gone, but one folder remains.

Important Step

Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps

Reboot into SafeMode.[/url <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

Reboot into normal mode.

Download the Hoster from herehttp://members.aol.c.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did.

Hey, I think we're just about there! Haven't seen about:blank, and haven't gotten any warnings from spy/ad ware detection software. Also, windows explorer and search seem to be working from the start menu.

I still have a "Sites about" bookmark in my favorites, but I'm afraid to touch it. It doesn't appear to be as malicious as the links that were there earlier. I ran activescan again, and it reported several infected files. Some of these appear to be legitimate (e.g. SideStep, Netratings), others look suspicious to me (CWS.Searchmeup, Petro-Line); others I just don't know (SaveNow, SuperSpider). Here's the log:

Download CWShredder from http://cwshredder.ne...CWShredder.exel and run the Program twice. Press the "Fix Button" Let it fix all variants.

Next, please look over the Following Entries I have listed, run Hijack This again and check them and then, making sure you have No Internet Explorer Windows open, including this one, Press the "Fix Checked" Button with HijackThis.

Reboot If I have specified below, and Post a Fresh HijackThis log.

I have been using SideStep (a program used to compare airfares, hotel rates etc across the web) for years without any problems. Are you aware of any danger stemming from its use (it has been reviewed in major newspapers like the New York Times)?

I removed nmtracer.dll and ab scissor.url (and the entire "Sites about" folder that had insinuated itself into my favorites), but not SideStep; everything seems to be working fine.

sidestep is debatable as spyware in my eyes. so please use your own discretion on that.

Download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies. http://www.javacools...areblaster.html

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Thanks again for all your help. I followed your suggestions above. Something I did disabled sidestep--which is a tool I do like to use--but since I'm not planning a trip right now I guess I can deal with that another time.
