Instant Messenger delays

Everytime I try to send an instant message, whether using AIM or MSN messenger, it delays for a few seconds and then finally posts what I had sent. Every so often, it freezes for a few moments as well. I've tried removing both AIM and MSN Messenger from my computer several times and re-downloading them, but the problem continues. I've even tried logging onto AIM Express and it still has the delay. Therefore I'm thinking it has something to do with instant messaging in general, not just AIM specifically. Any ideas? this is so annoying! thanks!
