Everytime I switch me computer on or restart it etc it starts in 4 bit colour! And I cannot change it!

I need to restore my computer for it to go back to normal. I have tried downloading the latest drivers for my graphics card and it hasn't worked I have an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Need more information. AGP graphics card? was there on-board graphics? What all have you tried so far? 16 colors is the standard windows display when it doesn't know what graphics card it is.
