New drive but XP hnags on install

Hi all,
This is a followup to an issue I've been doing battle with all week. Best workaround for me was to just put in a new harddrive and a clean install of Windows XP.
Well, I've installed the drive, and formatted it with Windows. But....when I restart and get the Windows Setup is configuring your hardware. . . then nothing. Screen goes balnk and it just seems to hang there.

Dell Dimension 8300, Windows XP SP1
new maxtor ultra 16 300gb drive
